Painting over a powder coated frame

Post by syvmn »

I'm going to be using some duplicolor spray on truck bed liner to paint my frame and I was wondering if I need to do any special prep work since it is powder coat. The plan is to rough up the powdercoat with 400 grit and wipe down with rubbing alcohol and then go strait to the truck bed liner. Does anyone see any reason to use a primer with this stuff?

Thanks

I would think the 400 is too fine. That bed liner is thick stuff, so it will need a rougher surface to stick to. I doubt primer is needed.

My question would be why??? Frames aren't cheap to powdercoat so why ruin it and paint over it?

Because I'm one of the groupies that are blacking out their bikes. :no I wasn't going to but I can't find side fairings at a decent price. Engine is black, the plastics I have are black and the frame being the factory white/silver just sticks out like a soar thumb. It wouldn't bother me if I had the side plastics. I'm not going to spend a couple hundred getting the frame powder coated black so I'm weighing the alternatives.

ok.. thats not unusual at all.. Many have gone the same path and powercoated their frame black to get the look you are looking for.. Why do you think your frame is currently power coated?

He's talking about the factory paint.

factory frames are coated? i do not think so... when I stripped mine down it came off in less than 3 min in our strip tank... powder usually will last over 15 min before it stripps. i am willing to bet it is just paint, if he uses 400 he will find out real fast. if you paint over it be sure you use a self etching primer
