Swingarm questions re: R6 rear shock conversion

Post by Pegleg Pete »

Hey Guys - I am about to fit my R6 rear shock to my 1988 3en1 and I want everything ready before starting.

My bike has the original 3en1 braced swingarm as pictured below

1. I think I read somewhere that I can't use the existing 3en1 swingarm without modification - Can anyone confirm this?

2. Has anyone done the R6 rear shock conversion using the 3en1 swingarm and if so, what modifications were actually needed?

3. Will a swingarm from a 3en2 model allow me to fit the R6 shock without modification and is it a *direct* replacement for my existing one i.e. needs no mods to the swingarm pivot etc

I've already had a look and I think it will be a hassle finding a 3en2 swingarm.

4. Are there any other swingarms from other models, perhaps fzr 600, which will fit my 3en1 model and still allow me to fit the R6 shock?

5. If the 3en2 swingarm is the better option, does anyone have one for sale?

If you use a 2008 R6 shock(yellow spring), you can flip the shock around 180* so the reservoir is facing forward. It should clear everything just fine that way. You will still have the same issues as any other R6 shock swap, upper bolt bushings/spacers and longer dogbones are needed, and some clearancing of the lower mount of the shock to clear the FZR knuckle.

MrFreeze - Cheers for your tip and the pictures - I have already bought an '07 (red spring) shock. Some people have mentioned that the '07 shock can also be fitted if spun 180degrees. Do you have an opinion on this?

George - Thanks for those links. I read through in detail.

I do have opinions on this. It SUCKS flipped! I wish the 08 shock was available in 07 when I put mine on :D The earlier, red spring shock will fit flipped 180*, but it hits the shock mounting tabs. I had to cut them off and remake it to clear the reservoir. The 08 shock has a smaller res and in a slightly different position, so it clears with no interference at all. If you are going to flip the shock around, 08 is the only way to go IMO.

Sorry it's taken a while to thank you for your help. I've been working on the front calipers most recently. Now that is done...

Situation so far is I have found a 3en2 swingarm however it does not come with the chain adjusters. Can anyone help me source a pair? (Will similar adjusters fit from other models...?)

I'm also unsure if I will need to change the rear axle / spindle or if I can get away with using the existing one from my 3en1 (Will I require any other spacers etc?)

Cheers
