I would send all the old broken bits to the original owner with a little note that you did not pay for them so you can have the back LoL

I'm very impressed you recognized that from that picture. I wish I had the guy's name and number still. I can't remember it or else I would do something like that for sure. What a douche bag.

I got the valves off and am getting them all cleaned up. What a job this is, they were as bad as those pistons. Sure hope all this shit works cause scraping and brushing 19 years of carbon build up off all this is a BITCH!

Shocka ,
not that impressive really when you look back and remember you have been looking at bike innards for 50 years :-}

As for scrubbing off Carbon you can use oven cleaner on STEEL bits ONLY NOT on ALLOY.

It will eat alloy and damage paint so do it out side as the fumes will not do you much good either and you can wear gloves for this but do not let the SO catch you or you will get a job for life cleaning the oven :-}

I guess that makes sense. I've only been lookin at bikes for 1 year now. I 've just been using carb cleaner and elbow greese and it seems to be working. got the head and pistons done, all I have to do now is all the valves.

Well, got tha pistons and valves cleaned and I'm putting everything back together. I'm gonna bolt it all up woth the old gaskets just to see if the bitch runs now that I got it cleaned out. If it does I'll get new gaskets and probably new rings for the pistons cause they are just out of spec and hope that I don't f*ck something up. Any advice for me or anything to watch out for. I've never rebuilt a motor before so and pointers would be appreciated.

First off do you have a manual? I.E. torque settings, valve timing, refitting the pistons E.T.C. put plenty of oil on the pistons/cylinders. Triple check the valve timing!! and check the valve clearances (valves have been out).

I'd be surprised if it started using the old head gasket (loss of compression, oil leaks, loss of oil pressure) could do more damage to the engine!!!!!! and if it did start more than likely won't run smooth. I'd defiantly change the oil filter (all those bits you found).

Saying that i've only rebuilt 2 stroke bike engines, but many of 4 stroke car/auto engines.

I do have a manual and all the torque specs. I coted the cylinders and pistons. Will definatly check the valve timing and clearances. Do you really think it could damage the engine. I only want to start it for a minute to see if the engine is ok after pulling all that stuff out of it. If it starts and runs even a little I'll know if the motor is ok then I'll take it apart and put the new gaskets on. I just really don't want to put a new $60 head gasket and $30 cylinder gasket on there without knowing if there is something else wrong.

I see your point on spending $90 for new gaskets, but id replace them anyway. To check for knocks/rattles you need the engine at normal operating temp (oil thins when its hot), and firing on all 4 pots.

The main issue is the head gasket (the 4 metal rings that seal the cylinders) plus you will get coolant leaks (into the cylinder/s?)

It's your call. if you decide to go ahead I personally wouldn't add any coolant and only run for about 1 min (shouldn't get to hot) that way you would hear any major damage.

If you decide to replace the rings you need to glaze bust the cylinders (remove the shine to give the new rings something to bed into)

Shocka,
REPLACE the gaskets at once not later sorry you are going to have to bite the bullet on that. Having no coolant even for a minute is very risky. breaking the glaze on the bore is absolutely required if the new rings are to be given even the slightest chance of working. (the joy of that is you can do it by hand (if you have small hands be sure to twist the emery cloth in a spiral pattern down the bore and then at 90 degrees to the first twist so the lines from the emery cross each other at about 90 degrees.
OR
beg ,borrow ,buy a ball hone for the size of bore to suite the engine us it with lots of fluids and DO not over do it as you are removing metal from the bore as well as the old gas varnish/glaze.

I have actually already put it all back together, fired it up and taken it all apart again. I wish I'd have known I would have just ordered the parts and waited. Oh well. It sounded and ran fine and I ran it for less than a minute. Just long enough to listen and see if anything sounded bad. I hope I didn't damage anything. I don't think I'm going to rplace the rings. Unfortunatly I lost my job just before all this shit happened to my bike so I have no money to fix it. Makes me sick since I have it all apart but there's just nothing I can do.

The first thing to get damaged (from heat) would be the pistons, you'd see the pick up (partial melting and the rings would get jammed in) since aluminium melts at 660.25 °C 1220 °F running for less than 1 minute, In my 35 years experience in the motor trade id very much doubt they would get that hot even with no coolant (ive saw engines ran for 5 mins and not one little trace of damage) unless your running nitro.

Since you have it apart let us know if the pistons are damaged. if not your good to go.

Infact im amazed it started with the old head gasket. however if you'd put coolant in the danger would be, a cylinder could hydraulic (fill with coolant) on the compression stroke at the very least it would totally flatten the big end bearing, at worst damage the crank, or bend the con rod. Even if it didn't start!!

I've already gotten it taken apart and the pistons and rings and everything are fine. Just waiting for the gaskets now.
