Finally got my bike out for a short ride today (first day I've been feeling good enough to ride since i got this stupid cold). It seems like the bike bogs down to about 2k coming off the line. I started it up w/o any choke and aside from giving it some intermittent gas during the first 30 seconds or so it warmed up w/o hitting the choke (i've almost always needed at least a little choke before).

I think I may have a tank of bad fuel right now, I noticed that it seemed like I didn't have any power even before I mucked with the bike. I'm going to give it a couple of days and see if that bogging off the line is still there.

If the problem is still there, does that mean I've overshot the mark and I'm running too lean now?

This is quite a timely post. Today I officially earned that wrench. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it could have been, although it took quite a while taking everything apart and reassembling after... but... wait for it .... I finally took the carburetors off, and changed the needle jet clip positions !!! YAY !

Back story: January 2006 (if my bad memory serves me correctly) I had a local shop install a new DynoJet jet kit, Race Tech fork springs, etc. and basic maintenance, fluids etc. Bike ran pretty good all year but was a little giggity-gaggity during the summer. I didn't get to ride it too much since had major back surgery and started riding motocross later that year. Got to ride it a bit more in 2007 and during the summer noticed it was a little more stumbly but not too bad really, especially since I was only riding it 4 hours a month, motocross taking all my time. So this winter I rode it quite a bit, and moved it closer to where I live, storage facility. Recently did a gas tank POR-15 treatment and after having tank etc. apart and back together successfully, gained a bit more mechanical confidence.

So anyway, probably the worse part today was actually get the gas tank and return throttle cable back in actually, all I did was take the black (front) (vacuum covers?) off each carb, pull the needle, note that they were all on the 5th (richest) clip position, and move them all to the 3rd position. It was hot as a S.O.B. today and I nearly sweat to death while working on it, but managed to not break anything or lose any tools. Just a little bit of missing skin on the back of the thumb from stupid gas tank being a tight bastard to get on. I hate how you have to really put on the gas tank and the airbox at the same time with hoses all coming up between, I guess this is pretty standard even with other brands, but, you'd think someone could have designed it a little better.
ClapHands
Anyway, point is, NO MORE STUMBLE, NO MORE GIGGITY. Running like a "raped ape" again. Of course from the 30 minutes I test rode it I was friggen deaf (probably made worse by not having the left fairing put back on yet). I really need to get that new pipe, no matter how pissed my wife will be. If I go any more deaf I won't be able to hear anything she says anyway. So thanks to all you guys who have posted info and pictures on carbs over the past couple years, between here and the Archives.

Clymer manual was decently helpful also, although I noticed they forgot to mention that the little 3mm allen-head pipe clamps (below carbs) need to be loosened to get them off.

So, back to your original question, I don't know, you just said you went all the way to LEAN. Personally I'd ride that tank empty and put in new fresh 93 gas and give it another week and see what happens. The gas might be old. If it still acts goofy then maybe move it back to position 2.

First off, congrats! you've earned that Wrench for sure.

As far as the airbox and tank... tanks comes off first and goes on after the airbox is secured.I don't pull that metal bar off in front of the gas tank either. No need. Just need to slide the fuel pump off the gas tank bracket (one nut) and the tank will come out and sit on a stool next to your bike - still connected to the carbs. Great way to test everything out before putting everything back together.

Maybe a How-To one day...

thanks, yeah, i took that black bar off anyway, just to get my hands solidly around the carbs and get them lifted off. they were on pretty tight. i probably should have taken the battery out too, but just too lazy. yeah, i guess i could have done a partial how-to if i remembered to bring the digital camera (probably subconscious is working since rechargeable batteries on camera only last a few minutes, making me not like the little battery-eater even more) ... hmmm... i guess i was also too lazy to take off the fuel pump, but i'm always lazy about that little guy. he seems to like being attached to the gas tank. funny how i'm looking at the whole thing thinking, ... "what can i NOT remove and still have this thing work ? "

I tell you what... duct tape and those black zip tie straps are great for getting throttle cables and all those pesky tubes out of the way. I almost felt like I knew what I was doing.

Getting the throttle cables reattached is a snap if you have an extra set of hands on hand; or you grew up near a nuke plant and you have a third arm :tard:

Its not difficult to get the throttle or return throttle cables on. Just install them before you attach the carbs to the intake. you can rotate the carbs for ease.
