bandit 400 rim onto fzr600

Post by tankmonkey »

I'm sure it's been done before, but I just finished swapping my rear wheel for a 17 x 4" bandit 400 rear rim. I'm running a 150/60-17 bt-003rs with a 110/70-17 bt-003rs front.

for the benefit of anyone searching for alternatives to the 18" stock rim, I used the following parts to complete the swap:

stock b400 rear wheel
stock b400 rear sprocket carrier
stock b400 wheel-to-caliper bracket spacer
stock gs500e rear caliper
stock gs500e rear caliper bracket
4 stock fzr600r rear axle washers

I used a 12" length of 3/4" x 1/8" wall extruded 6061-T6 square tubing as a brake stay. One FZR washer goes between the swingarm and the rear sprocket carrier (this aligns the rear sprocket with the front sprocket), the other 3 go between the gs500e caliper bracket and the swingarm.

I used the gs500e rear caliper and bracket so that the caliper would ride above the rear axle (as the stock FZR caliper does) versus the b400 style, which sits below the rear axle.

I really like the nimble handling of the FZR, just wanted a better selection of tires to choose from, so that's why I went with the b400 rim, as opposed to the wider GSXR swap.

hope this helps anyone thinking about undertaking a similar swap.

From reading this it seems he did not have to make any mods to use the rim. It seems odd that there is not more on this as it would seem simple. Any ideas why there is not more on this?

There have been other instances of putting Suzuki rims on FZRs: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=753

I read that article too. It seems to be a lot more involved with the GSXR rim. He did not mention any machining with the bandit 400 rim or special bearings, just the washers.

The rear axle mates with the bandit rear wheel very nice. I want to know what rear sprocket did tankmonkey use on the wheel as my chain is wider than the rear sprocket.
