Anyone use the gas tank epoxy sealant?

Post by kilika2 »

Just wondered if anyone had praise or negative comments on the acid etching and expoxy sealant for the gas tanks? I have the tank drained and off to work on the carbs, and figured I should spend the tax refund money on something useful, rather than working on my house :whistle

Chris,
I have been on M/c boards for 20 odd years and i have NEVER seen a post in praise of that rubbish only lots & LOTS & LOTS of complaints of it flaking , choking filters , carbs & the horror stories of getting it out once it was in.

Eh, I've got KREEM in my YZF tank and so far no issues with it. It is a pain to put in correctly. But it's one of those 50/50 things. Some like it some hate it. I'd say if your tank isn't rusty ten don't do it, but if it is rusty you might as well since it'll just rust again. POR-15 makes one that I heard more praise about than the KREEM. But to each his own.

If only there were reasonably priced Aluminum or stainless tanks....

That's what I figured too. Didn't know how well it would hold up. My tank really isn't that bad. No floaters, just a little rust alont the crease on the bottom. Thanks.

We used kreem in an old kd125 about 8 years ago or so and have had no problems with it at all.

I have POR 15 in two of my Kawi H2 tanks. These tanks are much harder to come by today than a replacement for an FZR6 so preservation is paramont. These are real tanks unlike the fuel cell of the FZR with a cover. A multi layer HOK Kandy paint job doesn't come cheap. Best $50 insurance policy I bought in long time. The key is following the instructions to the letter. I would stay away from Kreem. I have some krazy pics of a guy fishing the Kreem liner out of tank after it delaminated and clogged his petcock/carbs. I can't speak to his prep so maybe an unfair comparison.

when i got my fzr 400, i had to etch out the tank and seal it. i used the kreem brand and followed the the instructions very well, except that i left the etching in longer than recommended. i think i also double rinsed with denatured alcohol and made very sure it was completely dry before adding sealer. since then, i put over 10k on the bike, used various fuel treatments, marvel mystery oil and even straight seafoam in it. i think kreem works just fine.

Shift I'm sure you ar right. It's all about the prep and following the manufacturer's instructions, Here are the photos of the Kreem liner that this guy was fishing out. Again I can't speak for the tank prep only the pics.

yeah, looks like a poor prep job which caused the sealant not to stick. you can't blame a good product because the user couldn't follow directions. that'd be like me taking out new pilot power 2 tires, going 4 miles and trying to lean a hard corner, sliding off the road, then saying "these tires suck!" lol

i'm pretty amazed at the resistance to all the carb cleaning additives, straight seafoam and marvel mystery oil i've run through the bike. i would not have been shocked if those had eaten away at the sealant, but it all seems a ok.
