Making a Fork preload adjuster caps set -interested?

Well I worked on a set last night. Needed to go to the shop anyway. I have the design down, but it's getting it right with my semi retarded lathe. They are going to be a simple 4 piece design. Bolt, cap, block, and o-ring. I will need original fork caps in order to modify them for this endeavor. I have a few sets of spares so if people are interested in this, just so you know in advance, it would be a core exchange type of deal. I'll send you an all ready to go one but I'll need your fork caps back. If I do it this way I can do it much cheaper for you guys.

My first one was a slight fail as I mixed some measurements in my head but it's a very simple fix. I have everything in my shop to do it pretty much. The bolts I'm using are a 13 threads per inch instead of the 20 per inch the model I'm using uses. I don't mind changing that but I can't find any local with a higher tpi. I don't think anyone will miss it much. You'll still have over an inch of preload adjust.

I'm really trying to come in at ~75 for you guys to make these affordable. I'm modeling them off a lockhart quik-adjust that a friend had on their forks. I'd still like to see the JEM brandon, but if you don't get around to it no worries.

I'm thinking there will be the option to mix and match colors for powder for an additional fee. Otherwise they will all probably be black. I'll post some pictures up a little later.

So, what is the price with core exchange TK?
Might be interested in a pair, still waiting for them cages too...

have patience as I have been in contact with TK over a better design than the just one inch variation style that you need to have a guess at what pre-load you want to start with..


The design assumes no preload at all and allows 8 measured large increments that you can add more or less pre-load with a screw micro adjuster. IF you still do not have enough or too much you can make the large adjustment in a minute os so and then use the screw adjustment again.

This style does not care if you weigh 100lbs all wet or 300lbs it can cope & you can dial in the perfect setting for you.

SInce I am not making this I have sent the details to TK as he has to work with the design (which is stupidly simple) but looks complex but easily achievable on the machines he has.

Aww..I'm working on the fairing cages I swear! I actually went and picked up my fairings the other night so I have some to mock around. A little slower than I had hoped but I swear I'll get them to production.

As far as the preload goes, I'm looking to keep them around ~75. I don't want to charge a core charge if I don't have to so basically I'm going to take people at their word that they will ship me their caps back, but if someone ruins it, it'll ruin it for everyone else and then I'll have to start charging a core charge.

Brandon, I'm still down for pictures. I'd like to see as many different ideas as possible. So send pictures. Higher res is better so if you need to send them to an email just shoot me a PM.

George is sending me some diagrams of his design but it sounds doable. A few more moving parts but seems easy enough. We shall see.

They are mad eby Traxxion Dynamics as well as some other companies. Yoshimura makes some really good looking ones but those ones are $220.

The problem with self machining those is the threads. they have to be SPOT ON! with an oil tight seal! and they cant strip at all!
but as long as you get the lathe speed at the exact turn speed along with the right threading speed and proper depth then you should be good to go.
would be hella tedious to get right

to a competent machinist the set up is not too difficult and after the first one the rest are automatic on anything but the most basic of lathes.
220 USD is a farce as the material is all of about 3 dollars machining perhaps 40 dollars the rest must be shelf space rent as a slow selling item. :-}

That is pretty basic machining, the hardest thing on them would be the radial slots in the top which still arnt that hard with the right m/c and of course some1 who knows what there doing.

Last I heard was ThatKid has it on his "to do list" I even sent him a I figure a neater design than those guys and it will work on just about anyones bike .
He does have a proper business to run however and what we ask him to do is a "hobby" unless you are commissioning him to do the project then I would assume would become main stream by taking the investment ( the risky bit ) off his hands & pocket.
Someone recently bought 5-6 alloy tanks for 400's from ModKing in such a manner as to relieve him of the bulk of investment so that the buyer could get the design for his bike done at very little risk to ModKing.

If you can get a quantity of guys willing to put up cash for these then you would be laughing ( if you work it right might get your own caps free ie the cost of yours is met by all the other buyers. Your call.
