VR/R mounting question, Lesser of two evils...

Hey guys,

I'm running into an issue with regards to where I should put the VR/R (new-style) on the track bike. The problem is that if I put it in the stock location it touches the tail section (do they get hot enough to damage the fiberglass?). So here are the two options I'm thinking of:

1 Go ahead and mount it in the stock location if I'm able to find some kind of heat resistant tape (or something similar) to apply to the inside of the tail where it touches.

2 Mount it in the cavernous space on top of the undertail. Will it get too hot for the plastic of the undertail?

Advice is much appreciated as always.

You could do similar to what Kawasaki did on the Z750:


Keeps it cool as air is passing over the fins and what not.

That's a thought. Is it actually mounted to plastic or metal? I'm guessing metal, but have to ask.

I say if you could fit it in the stock location with a piece of aluminium on the tail piece it would work. I got a chunk from an old computer that I use for all of my heating needs. BUT the kawi idea is more practical.

Hey Chris,

I actually like the idea of leaving it in the stock location best because the VR/R would be mounted to the frame. Ideally, I'd like to find some of that stuff that's applied to the lower front of the lower fairings to protect them from the heat of the headers. Of course I may be able to just mount it to a larger flat piece of aluminum and stick it under where the passenger seat normally would be. I think the aluminum would dissipate the heat enough to not melt the plastic (IF it had the tendency to do so in the first place, that is).

the VR generates considerable heat ! If you read what I did on my site:-

You will read there is NO problem about your intentions.

NOTE:-
if you put it anywhere else the VR must be on metal to help cool it (in my case the whole darn tail sub frame) PLUS it MUST be earthed to the frame some how or another

Yeah it's mounted to metal. There are brackets welded to the frame to space the other side of the VR from the frame and allow air to pass over it.

Yep, this is where I got my idea of the computer aluminium before.

Well, I went ahead and mounted it under the tail for the time being. I'll just need to pay attention to it and if it looks like it won't work out, I'll go ahead and put it somewhere else.
