Tail Chop/'03 R6 Integrated Brake Light/Coolant Reservoir, N

Post by houseforsaken »

Ok so I've got my winter projects in order. Thanks to all who have helped guide me!

This is what I'd like to do...tell me what you think (see pic below). I know I'm gonna have to move the coolant reservoir. Any suggestions on what to use other than a soda bottle? I've seen some that look like stainless steel canisters. Other than the taillight and rear signals, what else will I need to re-arrange?

I've been looking at this '03 R6 Integrated Brake Light, I've been through all the posts about this kind of stuff and there hasn't been too much. They were all from at least 2 years ago. According to this ebay link Ebay '03 Integrated tail light it has these Dimensions: 6 5/8" x 2 1/2" x 2 3/4" (Width x Height x Depth). Anyone know what the fzr tail light is? Can this work?

Thank in advance. BTW some of you may have seen this from the fzrarchives site...was told may have more luck here, with help.

might have to move the vr i dont know exactly where it is i never had one with it stock theres also some of the sub frame that hangs down where you want to cut so youd have to adjust that. have you thought of the taail swap for that light it might be easier
ones life is the way it is only because you allow it make it happen.

Are you looking to keep it a 2 seater? If so, I would use the R6 tail to go with the tail light. You will have to do some fabricating to make the other seat fit, but it would be the best look.

I used that very light with an Airtech tail. Modking makes a very similar product.

Here how mine looked (it went through various color stages):

Thanks guys. I've looked at and read about the R6 tail/tank mods. I'm afraid that may be a little more than I'm comfortable with. I can handle the basic repair/replace/change out...that's about it. I also don't have the tools/resources for modding the subframe. Ragedigital, I do like what you've done with that tail! I've also read a lot about the Airtech tail...many seem to complain about cracking and modding just to getting it on.
I came across this...
http://www.fzrarchives.com/ipb/index.ph ... =chop+tail
this is what gave me the idea. Now looking at that undertail...I wonder if with some cutting maybe it would fit under the FZR???

Hi,
Re:- the coolant reservoir some of the guys use Radio control model fuel tanks which can be bought in all sorts of shapes and thus can be hidden umder the seat / fairing. Others use alloy or stainless steel kitchen jars / bottles and hang it on the engine sub-frame.

Going from memory (hmmm....) the FZR tail light is just under 5.5 inches wide and I have seen a GSXR "shotgun" style tail light used in its place with I am told a "little" bit of filing on the FZR plastic tail body work.

Like the colour scheme of the bike makes it look clean

I used one of those aluminum stadium bottles and a rubber stopper w/two holes drilled into it. It's a thicker aluminum, so its more crush resistant. Plus it blows people away when you tell them what it is. I mounted mine on the right side engine support, makes life simple. Easy to check!

Thanks yamaha_george and rider_rob! I found a shogun fender eliminator from the '09 GSXR...not too bad. Kinda had my heart set on the '03 R6 :( Not sure how I feel about recessing the brake light a bit (criticism welcome). I'm definitely going to have to look at those RC fuel tanks as well as those sports bottle. THANKS!
I too love the color scheme...it doesn't date it as much as some of the other schemes.

I should have made myself a bit clearer. A stadium bottle is one of those aluminum bottles that you occasionally find filled with Budweiser or some other brand. It's a beer bottle man!!

r_r,
That is something you are unlikely to find this side of the pond :-{ as all our stadiums are "dry" and carrying in booze is a big no no. We reserve the right to gat drunk outside and brawl at the slightest chance LoL

just an fyi with that r6 taillight. it's not going to fit directly with the stock fzr tail. a friend of mine had an r6 taillight that we put up next to the stock taillight and it's quite a bit wider. you would have to cut the center section and probably a bit of the side pieces and then probably do some mild fiberglass work to get it to look right. depending on the undertail you go with, you can probably get it to fit with a little modification. either way, i really like that taillight so i say go for it

Hey rider_rob, I googled "stadium bottle" and saw those aluminum beer bottles...not quite what I was planning, but thanks.
Thanks Demon_Knight69, from what it sounds like the R6 light is almost 2 inches longer than the stock...I do love that tail light, guess I'm gonna have to get creative. Though with the chop i'm planning on doing...it just might fit :) Gonna have to see.
I've found some aluminum/stainless steel water bottles which might work for the coolant bottle. Thanks!

the stadium bottle as i know if is just same as a beer bottle shape just in aluminum can form never thought about using one but now that i think about it would work great becuase of is shape and ease of hiding it ..

If you are leaning toward that route of tail like the one you linked from the archives . I would suggest either going with Airtech or R6 tail or even off a GSXR or CBR just for shits n giggles and have somthing no one has . I havnt done the R6 but did do the Airtech because i it was easy way out .. I wish i still had the bike as i would of attempted the R6 or even R1 tail swap as i like R1 02-03 tail better than any other bike .. But really cutting up plastic fairing and trying to make a differnt tailight fit into the FZR tail is gonna be just as much work or equal as trying to fit a R6 tail .. But in the end i think you would be more satisfied with your bike and your work if you just swapped out the tail . And this is comin from somone who swapped a tail before i even knew where my oil drain plug was or even how to change the oil .And if you get stuck these great chaps will be here to bail u out in no time .lol
