I just got a set of ninja mirrors on ebay and they are so much better than the stockers
I had to lift my arm and lean to see with the mouse ears
The stalks are at least 2 times as long and the mirror itself is way wider
Totally worth the $20

Why then does Yamaha show a distinct different part number for the 89-90,93-99's and the 91-92's? I want to believe they're identical so that I can just buy any old mirror stay.. but are you sure?

I'm quite sure of this. The mirror stay is exactly the same. Yamaha's numbering system can be, in some cases, "special". The part numbers in question are STAY, MIRROR 1
3HE-2831W-50-00 (91 FZR 600) & STAY, MIRROR 1 3HE-2831W-00-00 (96 FZR 600). As you can see they aren't that far off. My guess is they do this to differentiate the bikes from one another. You'd be surprised how many of the same parts have different part numbers.

They are not the same. The 91-92 is for the single headlight model. It uses different mounting points for a few items. Partially because the fairing has a much more pronounced angle to it compared to the 89-90 & 93-99. You can use it, but it is not an exact fit and will require some minor modification to the light mounting tabs to work.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.
