nice write up and for once as you say cheap & relativly easy. My only point is the make & model of your timing light.

I have not seen one like that except from SUN when I had my workshop (still have it but at 4K miles and 10 flying hours in each direction ...........)

Pointers to sources would be good too as I doubt that many "ordinary" folk have one

they are a local company/employer----being Fox Valley Instruments back in the day..Now GxTAutomotive/Ferret. Their factory/shop is four blocks from my house. They used to have a 'blemished sale' each spring...would sell equipment with scratches in the housings and other cosmetic damage at auction pricing. Don't know if they still do that or not. A Brother in my square is a draftsman for them..I'll ask.

The area Advance Auto has a wall display of timing lights....from $39 on up...about $80 will get you digital. I am sure this is true at the other do-it-yourselfer auto parts stores.

And, there are 28 different units up on Ebay right now.."timing light, digital' including a very nice Mac Tools unit at $41 right now.

(and almost any hod rod car guy is gonna have one in his garage-If I had to borrow one it would be a matter of which friend was at home,not which one HAS one....I dunno..that's the kinds of friends I have)

Just a quick update...

I don't know why I waited so long to re-do this on my bike(or how I was tolerating it when I went from advanced to stock!~).

It is SOO much punchier...any whack of the throttle is soo much more productive.

ok, I completed this mod today!
hella lot of work
*drilled out the screws holding the pickup to to the cover and basicaly f*ck up the mounting part on the cover. thought I was a GONER!
I was VERY lucky to find that there are also mounting holes for the coil on the Engine case itself!!!
so I drilled and tapped those holes and of course, the tap BREAKS off in the one hole! Thought i was a goner then!
It took forever to get the holes elongated on the coil..i used grinding stone and everything...then i just took my drill bit and pushed it into the side of it till it drilled out what i needed.
then i used a washer to space out the pickup to line up with the timing things on the flywheel because the engine mount one is set back a bit.
luckely the tap broke off over the surface and had enough to hold the other side of the coil up.
i used nice new bolt on other hole and it holds great...a bit trickier to mount the cover though when using the engine mounts for the coil...

Then I prepared to hit the start button.
I press it...starter turns twice and vroom! it starts! yayayayayayayaay
took her for a spin and it did make the front end lighter! not a whole lot but there is a difference there!
ill have to check what timing its at. I dont own a light so I gotta go to the shop.

anyways...I need a new stator cover...pre-unscrewed my way is holding though!

How far is to far with advancing?
you did a 6 degree, but would 10 degree be to much and screw it up? or would it make it better?

You will know if it is too far advanced the bike will go in reverse :j/k

No. I just wanted to be positive that I was getting at least 5° of advance. And, I like to KNOW where it's at for any future tweaking.

You will basically be limited by the allen screw head coming into contact with the pickup body itself, so it is not like you can advance waaay too much.

Keep an ear out for pinging....and if you get any, either back off the advance a little, or go up a grade on fuel and you will be fine.

I just finished this mod and I cant feel a low end difference but high end i definatley feel it it jumps at about 8 grand on.

Okay nvm i was wrong! It has power thru out the rev range i just didnt let it warm up at take the full advantage of the power. But once it warmed up omg it makes a huge difference it hauls butt! Thanks for the great idea im looking forward to more free mods so keep me posted!

yeah, well it aint free...but $52 gets you adjustable cam sprockets from Falicon...next time you check/adjust valve lash....put them in.

Degree the cams and add in 10° of retard to the intake cam(higher dynamic compression) and really make it punchy!!!
