1987 FZR1000 Swingarm Swap

Post by NoNothing »

Hey all,

Ive been a long time browser and learned a ton here. And now Im in need of some advice I cant find on the wiki or with search, though my skills may be failing me.

I have a 1987 FZR1000 I picked up earlier this year, it had been dumped, endo'd no less and had damage to the front fairing, both side fairings and quite a bit of damage to the front fairing metal brace whatever thing. I thought those were the only issues until I got a tire replaced at a dealership and was told that my rear rim and swingarm were both damaged. The swingarm is bent and the rim has a bit of a ding in it.

So Ive been pursuing the forums/wiki knowing Ive seen swingarm swaps before. (and if I've missed an article, I'd love to be called an idiot and given a link to it :D) I know most are to R6 swingarms, but the thing I cant find is any 1000 going to a new swingarm, it seems to be 400's and 600's.

So Im looking to do a whole rear end replacement and starting my research, hopefully I can do the replacement during winter. What Im wondering are any specs on the swingarm that are vitally important, are the rear of the 1000 and 600 similar? And more importantly if I swap for an R1 or R6 swingarm, am I looking at issues with the chain not lining up properly? I know Im looking at replacing a lot of parts, including the shock, which is a good thing in the end, IMO. Im just looking for as much information as possible before I go buying parts and disassembling my bike.

Thanks!

And here are some pictures of my baby, before and after I repaired the fiberglass and painted her.

Hi,
well you missed the article about putting a 1000 swinger in a 600 with R6 / GSXR 6 shock which would have given you the clue that the frame throat to take the swinger on 6's & 1k's are identical.

It follows therefor that the any mis alignment for 600's would be the same on 1K's ie throat width needs altering and chain alignment will be an issue.

If you want the short answer get a standard swinger.

Since you are changing parts, now is a great time install a 17" wheel, there are few 18" tires for the OE wheel...

Also, anything can be made to fit if you have time, determination, access to machine tools and money....

Best
