Stock clip-ons question

Hey everyone. I bought this fzr a few months ago as my first bike and since it had a bit of plastic damage I am slowly converting it to something street fighterish. Today pulled off the front crash cage/fairing/lights and gauges and was thinking about rotating the stock clip on handle bars forward to see if I liked the new position instead of the stock slanted position. When I loosened up the clipons and pulled them up I noticed that the stock position seems to be the only position they can be in. There is a tiny little hollow tube that effectively (or non-effectively) locks the bars into position.

I circled the little bar I'm talking about and how it fits into the clipons. What can you guys tell me about this? Do I have to get a new set of handles if I want to change the position. Thanks for any help, being a noob is difficult.

You can just grab yourself some Vise-Grips and pull those pins out. They are only there to help put the bars back on straight. If the bike goes down on either side the pin will get sheered right off anyways so they're not there for any other reason. However, be careful with moving the bars forward like that as you'll lose some bar clearance for when you need to move the bike around. Personally, I think the position they are in is optimum. If anything, a lot of guys move the clip-ons straight down under the top triple. I did this on my '89 way back when and I'd do it to my current street ride (in my signature - shameless plug!) but my back just isn't what it used to be! LOL!

The roll pins are just a fail safe for putting the bars in place.

For those of us who are a little older I am working on some fork tube tops that actually are higher by the bar boss height so that the forks can be left alone ( and not alter the steering geometry) but the bars can be raised by enough to ease the amount of weight on the shoulders for long trips.

if you're going for the street fighter look you could do what I did and take the clip-ons off took the controls off flipped them over and swapped them so the left is upside-down on the right fork and the same for the right raises the bars up a few inches
89 FZR 4/600- Chopped and fightered out, r6 header mod w/ Micron can
02 r6 front master cylinder/calipers & SS lines, 02 r6 clutch perch, 03 R1 front end, works performance rear shock. Its a work in progress still.

I tried that but it set my wrists awkwardly and on along journey ( 320 miles) it was too much strain you youngsters are more flexible though.

There are after market clip ons that can be set for forward / back and the downward or upward slope to suit your ride height (teleflex ???? make them ?????
