Yup most guys seem to have mounted theirs like that, I just did mine the other way (turned 90 to allow wind to blow down the fin length, rather than rely on convectional cooling only)

PLUS I coatedthe rubberside with heat paste (computer geek stuff) and made a plate to fit real snug onto the rubber area only & heat pasted that to the main heatsink frame mounted plate . End result is a real cool VR )

I’m still a little worried about how hot its getting. After just letting it idle to test the voltage across the bat. It gets so hot I cant touch it. I don’t want it to melt my plastics. I am in Arizona and it was 113 today

Shhessh that aint hot that is cooking !!

My thought was that the spinning of the rear wheel made enough turbulence to keep my oversized plate cool (we only get the odd 85 here )
However there is nothing stopping you riveting on an extra bit of alloy to the plate you have to act as a scoop, or as one gear head did a a fancy hole to the side covers and add a mesh to tidy it up like the "bling" front fenders you see with scoops & mesh (China racer has those on his site so you can see what I am on about)

What have I told you about corrupting the young and innocent ............... LoL

That is a good idea IF the ducts are in the right place of course, with Madam on the back and my 6ft frame at the helm not sure how much air they would get. but some increase at Buckets temps has got to be better.

May be we should think about using PC technology to liquid cool the VR, or machine the heatsink to take a PC fan (they are 12 volts).

Failing that replicate the original plate in a better heat conductor metal like copper or brass with extra area fins wheel side and a duct over those to avoid sharp edges and increase air flow over the finned area by having large inlet narrow over the fins and large outlet if my physics is remembered correctly.

I'm going to try and cut some 1/16th 6061 to fit in the recessed part of teh VR(the actual circuitry) on the back......mate it with PC thermal compound...and do the same as a bracket for the VR.....I'm gunna need ALOT of thermal paste

the pc fan idea should work fine too, they make lots of small form factor CPU fans....shouldnt take much either

You guys need to stop taking my ideas out of my head and posting them. I was thinking the same thing mounting a USB fan right on the VR then I saw this jus stick the cold side on the back of the VR mounting bracket.

The Peltea (sp) unit would work great I think. you would just have to drop your voltage to around 5.5V

I found this one runs from 0-16v DC, but I dont think the VR should be ren at -60 deg. It says it can run from -60 to +180 deg. how do you adjust the temp throught voltage? I think Im going to pick one up and give it a try if I can figure out how to adjust the temp.
