So I just got my bike...& problems......
So the other day my bike started to miss fire. I thought well it’s probably the spark plugs pulled one and looked fine, so I’m thinking plug wires..So I'll get a set in a few days. Well I took the bike to the video store, and on the way back it starts to miss bad. It seems to miss at or above 6K RPM, on more then 2 cylinders. I park it and go inside play some video games for a few hours( I’m very lame like that…). Finaly go mess with it, start it up and let it warm up for 5 min. pick it up drop it in gear and it dies( kick stand…) go to start it and all I get is clicking from the starter. Bat only has 10v and looks like it needs some water. But haven’t charged it yet. If the Bat. Is good what could cause it to drain? The lights seam to go dim before it died when the turns where on but I paid no wary to it.
Im going to get some water for the bat and charge it tomarrow. If anybody has suggestions I would love to hear them.
Re: So I just got my bike...& problems......
First get a NEW battery. No use to trying to get things going on a low or dead battery. These bikes really prefer a fresh battery and can get quite testy when the battery is not up to snuf. Next get a Clymer or Haynes manual for the bike if you don't have already one. Also, check out this site..

Could very well be, get a new battery then check the electrical. There is a diagram floating around here somewhere that walks you through the process. I need to have it tattooed on my forearm for reference.R3TARD wrote:Sounds like a VR going bad Id say

check the voltage coming across the battery before you get a new regulator
assuming you can get it running again to check it...

Re: So I just got my bike...& problems......
charged the bat. up to 12.9V fired right up. disconnected the – side and died did the same on the + side….. So something’s wrong with the charging system. How can I test the VR? And the alternator( is that what I should call it? The manual called it a AC generator.)? I put my volt meter on the bat. and ran the motor up to 3K and it had had 13.7V on it which it should be 14-15v.

GREAT STUFF!!!
So I ran some tests... I did the regulator test and came up with about 45V across the all of them, ok so its bad, but it looks new??? There’s a small crack on the back I don’t know if you can see it in the pics. I’m not an electrical noob, but I don’t get the reason the meter needs to be set to AC volts when doing this test. Does the generator produce AC voltage? Or is it a typo in the right up?
I also did the Stator test and came up with about .4 to .5 ohms this could be just my meter though Its not a cheap one but does not read RMS.
The regulator.

The crack is near the connection.

As far as the battery goes, you might as well get a new one. You can get one for 36 at Wally World.

Re: So I just got my bike...& problems......
Yeah, you get AC off the stator, the rectifier/regulator converts that into DC that the bike & battery can actually use. Your pics aren't working either, not sure why...bucket wrote:^^^^^

Yup the generator (alternator ) produces AC currernt. The VR has the Diodes to produce the DC for lights etc in it.
That VR in the picture is not the original and not one I recognize either. If it shows acrack only slightly visible in the pictures the PC board in side may have a or a blown component / busted track.
I would not be taking chances with it .
Get a replacement VR R6 models are good.
There is another thread on VR's at present with a link to NAS's site with a how to install since the plug on the two bikes are different, with comments from me about GOOD quality terminals that are available to us.
I have a couple of pics of a R6 VR installed my way ( not for everyone since it requires sheet metal work ) for ageneral ide at:-

How hot should the VR get? Mine gets really hot.
This is how I installed it. just used the stock mounting plate and drilled a hole in it for second mounting point.
