Rear Shock Upgrade, ideas and help please.

Post by AR91RX »

After riding my buddies 600RR and feeling what a bike is like without a squishy real shock, I realize its time to upgrade. I tried doing some searching but did not find a real solid post about all my options. What are my different options and what kind of adjustability will I be getting. What are the expected prices on said shock?

-Thanks, Andrew

1) Fox Shox. They are not made anymore so you will need to find one used on forums or eBay. They go for $100-400 depending on condition. Fox will still service the shock if you send it to them.

2) Ohlins. They do not make it for the 600 or 400 any more (same shock). Last one I saw on eBay went for $400+. Ohlins will service it if you find one, but it will not be cheap.

Both of these will give you about the same level of adjustability and springs are available to match your weight.

3) Suspension Techniques. They will make it, but it usually takes them 4-6 weeks. It is not adjustable and is $400 new. I've had one, and it was not worth it in my opinion.

4) Penske. They will make you one. In Double of Triple clicker. Very expensive as you will have to buy new. $700+

5) 06-09 R6 shock (not the R6S). Easy to modify to the FZR. Can be re-valved and rebuilt. Cheap. $80 - will need new dog bones

6) 2001+ GSXR 600/750. A little more involved than the R6. But not too bad. The Busa shock is about the same. Fairly cheap. Will need new dog bones as well.

These are just a few.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Also 2001-2005 Yamaha FZ1 Shock. New spring is needed, but no dogbones. Some people say the FZR spring can be modified to fit, negating the need for a new spring.

These mods are well documented both in the Forum & WIKI. There is also a GearHead Post about a guy who turned a GSXR <?> into a remote resevoir type shock if you want to get real fancy.

Also has I think 3 how-to's with pics as to how to do it etc.

I would go with what reelrazor has imo its by far the most bang for buck.
I'm not tying to knock the fizzer. I have an fzr600 and a 600rr and your not gonna even get close to the same feel from just changing the rear shock on the fzr. I can say that changing the forks and rear shock on my FZR was the best mod I ever did to her though..

Yeeeeah was pretty sure I would never make the Fizzer run like a RR, wouldn’t that be sweet though, haha. So right now I’m leaning towards either the R6 or GSXR (2003 GSXR750 specifically) shock mod. Are either of these shocks superior to the other? Does either have more adjustability?

-Thanks again, Andrew

If you're 160lbs (I'm 205lb) or heavier I wouldn't go with the 03 gixxer 750 shock. The spring rate is too low. That bike is lighter that the FZR600 and the shock sits at a different angle. I ran one in my old bike (92 fzr600) back in 07 and even with the all the settings cranked all the way up it would damn near bottom out on any kind of spirited acceleration. It's also like 3 inches longer than the FZR shock as well. If you got that route, have the spring swapped out for one with a higher spring rate and be prepared to alter your battery box because after you bolt in the shock it will all of a sudden be sitting too low. I'd suggest going with ReelRazor's R6 Shock Swap Kit or similar since it has all the needed parts included to do the swap and is a tried and true dealio. If you still are intent on going with a gixxer shock the go with 07 and up 600/750 (looks very similar to the 06 R6 shock and has a lower slung horizontal reservoir but has a yellow spring instead of red).

Hi,
If you are still in doubt you can see what is involved by looking at :-

http://www.saltmine.org.uk/fzr/3tj-mod.html

I {@ 180lbs } used the GSXR shock (you will see if you go thro the link the 'Busa stuff as well) and with the emulators she rides like a dream.

If you want a one stop deal for ALL the bits then RR's sets are ideal (his workmanship is up to par as well, having ordered bits from him in the past) and TKlow's sale is RR's work but on Flea bay instead of here.
