Re: Project X
Thanks for the tips on the race removal boys... for now I've moved on to the trying to get the r6 subframe fitted on the fzr frame. I had a couple ideas how I was gonna attack the subframe dilemma but due to the lack of tools I have access to at the moment I had to kinda go the target30 route. I am gonna leave some of top rails of the fzr subframe intact and bolt the r6 subframe to the sides of them...
for the bottom I think I'm going to weld up some angle to the fzr frame and bolt the lower r6 rails to these. Let me know if you guys have any other possible solutions on how to mount the lower r6 rails to the fzr frame. I bent the r6 lowers as much as I could and it was nowhere near enough to mate with the fzr lower subframe rails.

Re: Project X
Hi,
Lets try and do this the neat pro way.
If you have left enough old FZR top rail you can use a steel bar that will slide (fairly tight fit ie buy bigger and use your grinder to get it down to size ) right into it the bit of bar that sticks out 2"+ should be a tight slide fit into your new tail end.
Once you have established slide fits & depths have a pal weld the bar into the new tail section (our local shop would do this in tea / lunch break for beer money)
The bottom bit you do the same but use the old FZR top rail as your box to weld on the frame (do this weld last by the way) repeat the bar and new frame bit as above.
slide the whole assembly onto the bike to get the alignment right for your "boxes" left and right lower fixings get the boxes welded to frame.
Then you can drill through the boxes thro the bar stock and out the other side for the fixing bolts. (this is the style later bikes use bolt on rear ends )
Personally I weld a thick flat washer to each side of the frame "boxes" to re-inforce the box wall the idea is that should you not bolt them up tight enough the bolt will not cut thro the box wall !!!

Re: Project X
what kind of tank is that? it fits very nice. That should work on the r6 tail, just make sure you get it bolted well, you might even think of picking up a nutsert tool from HF that way you are only drilling through one side of your frame. I will be doing what mszilves did with using just the last half for the paasenger seat.

Re: Project X
Micro fiche says the 600 and 750 use the exact same tank. If you look at the part numbers, the only difference is the last 2 digits which designate color.sweekster wrote:YZF750 Tank. The dimple in front of the gas cap gives it away.Genesis wrote:what kind of tank is that? it fits very nice.
However, I have yet to find a picture of a 600 with the dimple in it.

Re: Project X
That's probably is a fox eye thing, which would make sense since they both used that big in tank fuel pump.

Re: Project X
Yeah, the 750 gas tank lines up pretty well. The only thing is its a little wide up by the neck. It overhangs the frame by like 1/8" on either side but its hardly noticeable. I got my fzr1000 rear tank bracket and tried fitting that up yesterday and after damn near flattening it out completely its still not wide enough for the 600 frame.
So, Im gonna cut the box piece which the tank mount fits over off the fzr1000 tank bracket and weld it to a piece of flat bar. Then Im gonna weld the flat bar to top of the subframe rails.
As for the r6 lower rail mounts Im gonna weld some angle to the fzr frame and bolt the r6 lower rails to the angle. I bent the r6 top rails to hug the sides of the fzr top subframe rails and im gonna slam bolts through those as well. I'll get pics... DONT WORRY!

Re: Project X
Check out the lower subframe mounts on this yzf600r. He welded some angle and shaped it just like what I plan on doing. Looks pretty good.

if you look in parts for sale you can find the frame mrfreeze has with the r6 sub on it not a great pic but might inspire an idea if you havent seen it yet

Re: Project X
MX,
I am worried about angle as your mounting the forces involved are likely to let the bolt either cut thro the material or rip the weld right of the bike.
The reason for using box section tubing is the four welded sides to your frame, the fact that all four sides take stress.
The top stops the back seat going downwards
the bottom seats the weight of the sub frame
sides (being re-inforced with washers welded to the out side will spread the fixing load and provide a thicker circumference to support the bolt )

Re: Project X
Geo,
I think you might be right. I'll have to look around for some steel box tubing that fits snugly around the r6 aluminum tubing because the fzr subframe box is too small. The more I think about it the less I like the idea of the lowers only being supported on one side... good call george

Re: Project X
That should work, it is what I would have done, If I knew how to weld, keep in mind you will to want to keep that section as close to the frame as possiple. Once you get the mount in it will raise the rear of your tank up. otherwise you will have to really flatten out the rear of your tank. post pictures when you get it mounted. I had alot of trial and error.mxryder21 wrote:So, Im cut the box piece which the tank mount fits over off the fzr1000 tank bracket and weld it to a piece of flat bar. Re: Project X
I cut the subframe off the bike last night and have been test-fitting the r6 subframe ALOT to match it up the best I can to the FZR frame. I'll take pics as soon as I can. I have to borrow my moms camera but shes in vegas and wont be back until tuesday.
