what rear tire?

as we all know, there are limits to the type of tires we can get for our 18" rear wheel.

I currently have a 150/60zr18 BTO14 on my bike and it worked great but it flattened out in the middle and there is no more tread left (pleantly of curve tread left) probably from much straight miles. (ill add that Iv never done a burnout in my life)
I got the tire installed january 5, 09...

I found another 160/60zr18 BTO14 for $99... im debating getting it.

iv heard of the Shinko 006 Podium 150/60-18 rear for $105...not sure if anyones tried that.

what tire is everyone running?/how many miles you got on it?/is it flattining in the center?

I do alot of highway riding but I also do alot of track still hard curve driving. I was thinking about the dual compound but i need cheap.

so any suggestions?

shred, I have the Shinko 006 Podium front and rear and have no complaints. They warm up quick and are still pretty sticky. The price is definatley right, I got the set from bikebandit for like $165.00 shipped for the pair. I think Mark has the rear on his R6 also with no complaints but I don't want to speak for him so i would ask him

It's pricey, but the Avon Storm is a great choice for good wear down the middle and great grip. My current one has double the miles I was getting on Bt014s (its at roughly 7500 miles and is barely starting to show center wear and I have ridden it right to it's edge).

So, if price is a concern...look at it this way....what would TWO cheap tires cost? More than the $148 price of the Avon?

What's 'cheap' ?

i just need about $700 more to be out of debt, so I cant just spend money on anything...expecially since right now im not working because of my crushed thumb. and now I need a whole new chain/sprocket set and a head gasket and everything.

I spent over $200 just for my BTO14 rear tire/installation.

Id like to keep the tire price around $100. if I buy the tire threw Pure Acceleration by me, then they will let me use there tools to change the tire for no charge.
i was in need of a new front tire bad, so one of the guys gave me his old pirelli with alot of life left for no charge and we changed it out and balanced it for no charge.
the pirelli is a great tire, it grips great.

ill have to look into that avon

Well, I got my Avon AV56 Storm 160/60zr18 installed last saturday and MAN does it grip
went for several rides back and forth on Patterson Rd. including one with a 99' vette chasing behind me.

if I lean anymore, I will be sideway... lol

The BT-014s do wear the center down way too quickly. Let us know how the Avon does over time Shred.

Make sure you scrub the tire all the way or it doesn't count....

Mine's doing great...7500+ miles.

and, I was gonna say......If you hate chicken strips, Shred, why you got 'em?

. If I lean any further, Ill low-side. I dont have knee pucks either.
these thiner tires have more of a radiaus to them.
I was looking at my buddies R1 and I was like that rear tire is cheating because its tread doesnt go as far down the sidewalls as mine.

I want someone to show me pics of there fzr with no chicken strips...with stock rim.... C:

i cant do no 90 degree lean angle like rossi! lol

haha! Rage! you still have chicken strips! its called a sidewall! thats awesome dude! and shred, i got less chicken strips on mine, and i am old, with a 1 year old daughter and only ride to work when i get a chance! haha, just kidding, ride to where you are comfortable. you will learn a bit better form, and all of a sudden you have rage chicken strips! you will be surprised. always be learning, when you stop learning, you stop growing...

thats not the problem... lol

i can lean. the radious on my tire doesnt allow for no chicken strips. I would literly have to be sliding on the exhaust.

I think you would be surprised how easily those "chicken strips" would disappear with a couple of Track Days.

LEAN IT!!!

(I should have my head off the bike more, so the bike can be more upright, but I get tired quickly though. It's hard to do that all day.)

A) If you bought the CORRECT size tire, the profile would likely be better. http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/storm-st -Note, Avon themselves says that the 160/60-18 should be mounted on a 4.25"-5.00" rim.

B) The tire shouldn't be maintaining it's static profile when you are riding. If it DOES, your air pressure is too high.

D) if the exhaust drags, twist your mid-pipe and get that can tucked up a bit higher-yours hangs as low as a midget pornstar

I have the right air pressure.
it was like 32 front 34 rear...I think.
I had the guy installing it put the right air pressure in for the style riding I do which was the same as him.

I was actually going to get the 150 but I allready had the 160 on order so I couldnt change it.
im just glad it fits and I have no problems with it so far.
there is like 1/8" space from the tire to chain and tire to caliper mount. scary. I thought the tire would change shape in corners or something and hit but it doesnt and im happy with it.

for once i have to agree with shredex, my bt-014's won't let me get rid of all my chicken strips, and i have even hit the exhaust, and scraped the body work on the pavement, scared the shit out of me when i lost traction.
