1988 FZR 1000 6 Piston Calipers
Greetings -
I just purchased a 1988 FZR 1000 its in great shape.
Does anyone know if modern, 6-piston calipers can be bolted on ?

Yes...they can be. You'll need the matching master cylinder from a 94-95 FZR1000 or any year YZF750. OR you can go with a 19x18mm or 19x20mm radial from any other bike. And easier option is the YZF600/YZF-R6/R1/FZ1 Silver, Blue, or Gold dot 4 piston calipers. They bolt on as well. Another option would be to keep your current calipers and change the master cylinder to a 16x18mm radial from an 07+ R6.
Hope that helps

Sweet, thanks.
Do you know if the master cylinder for the 94-95 FZR 1000 / YZF 750 will have a remote reservoir ?

Yep, they do but to be honest I'd be looking at going another direction. The master cylinder for the 6 pots isn't exactly the best (ask me how I know
). One of the other options I suggested will be much better. I'm looking at swapping in a 19x18mm radial master when i get the cash to use with the 6 pots on my 94 1000 because it'll just be much better.

Is there a particular reason you want 6 piston calipers? The blue or gold 98-01 r1 4 piston calipers are lighter and provide just as good stopping power as the yzf750 6 piston calipers. Im not sure if they are a direct bolt on for the fzr1000's like they are for the 91+ fzr600's but thats what I would do

Re: 1988 FZR 1000 6 Piston Calipers
OK - thanks - I have only had the bike for 4 days so Im new to all this....
Are the newer 4 piston silver, blue, gold dot calipers monoblock ? Meaning, are they machined from one piece of material, not bolted together like the older style ??

Re: 1988 FZR 1000 6 Piston Calipers
Yep....lighter and, resulting from design, stronger. The gold spots are the best as they have teflon coated pistons (no binding under hard braking). The silver spots are the rarest to find as they are on early FZ1s and the blue spots are plentiful. They will work with the stock master cylinder as well.cecorri wrote:OK - thanks - I have only had the bike for 4 days so Im new to all this....

Re: 1988 FZR 1000 6 Piston Calipers
Thanks for messing up my sale, guys -
kidding! (Do I hear Pimp doing a Nelson "Hah-ha!" at me?
)
Seriously, nothing they're saying is wrong. The reason I have these calipers on the shelf is I'm upgrading mine to YZF600R calipers + R6 M/Cyl. The YZF750's 6-pots are probably better than what you have; the blue dots are better yet. The decision is whether you can get a set of R6 blue dots for less than US$50 + 30 shipping (or close enough that it makes no difference).
(pics tomorrow if still interested)
cheers,
Don

hi,
the Blue spot caliper are VERY cheap and they can get you doing stoppies very easily, Just make sure you use stainless steel braided hoses (2 pieces only and buy a double banjo bolt with bleed nipple built in for the M/C makes bleeding & set up OH so EASY) see:-

Thanks every one !! Great advice...I will go with the 4 piston monoblock calipers (sorry DonTZ125 !!) and I will NOT get the later style radial mount....
