r6 swingarm question

may be a stupid question but do you need to have a chain gaurd on your swingarm?

They help keep the dirt and grease from splattering all over your tail, but I took mine off. You don't have to have it.

when i got my bike it didn't have a chain guard. i hadn't run one at all the entire time i've had it (little over a year now). course 5-6 months of that the bike was in pieces. but i've still put a few thousand miles on it with no chain guard. it's more of a safety precaution than anything. if the chain happens to break while under acceleration it could cause some serious damage to the bike and your leg. with a guard on there, it's a little less likely to damage much, except the guard itself

any other comments are welcome as always

oh, and rage is right, keeps the splatter to a minimum. just builds up in the guard.

in some states you need them to pass inspection. i dont use mine. i personaly like the old zx7/7r sytel chain gaurds. if i could mod one for my 929 i'd run one.

new question for those that did the 03-05 r6 swingarm did the chain guide fit on the swingarm cause i cant it to go on and line up correctly

i did the yzf600r swingarm and the chain guide dident line up but its still on there havent finnished the r6 one yet so i dont know the outcome

99-02 R6 swingarm on mine and used the R6 chain gaurd but ran without one for awhile before the swinger swap

Here in the UK the darn law says you have to have one, but even if not I still would - nothing like an arse covered in chain lube to form your views on that one!

Chain guards are worthless except for as Rage said........plus if your chain breaks it'll tear that guard right off anyways, it offers no protection what-so-ever

My experience has been that the chainguards just add to the shrapnel...they get bent/mangled, half stuffed into the front sprocket cover and cut on rear tires when they do. The OEM plastic is less damaging...but they are butt-ugly too.

I can't remember the last bike of mine that retained it's chainguard..........
