Wont go into gear....
So i got my bike done and took her on a 25 mile ride. One problem.
It shifts nicely into 1st and 2nd, but going to 3rd-4th-5th at high RPM's doesn't happen. I have to let it drop to about 4k rpms b4 it will slip into gear...
Now, my shift peg and shifter are a little wiggly cuz they are rusted together and the bolt that holds it to the bracket is stuck, but i don't think thats the issue b/c it goes into 2nd at high rpm just fine.
So whats wrong with my trans?

Re: Wont go into gear....
I think Duane had it correct in your other thread. Shift Forks. You can remove the oil pan to see if they are f'ed up or not. You should be able to see most of the gears as well. When you drain the oil, look to see if there are metal pieces in the oil. If so, that is really bad. You should be able to change the shift forks buy removing the clutch basket and the shift dent arm. That will allow you to remove the pins and shift drum / forks. If you have to replace any of the gears, you will have to dismantle the engine completely.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Re: Wont go into gear....
I just changed the oil today and it was REALLY dirty but no noticeable metal shavings or anything. Will the gears be obvious on their condition, or is it hard to tell if they are screwed? So the shift forks can be changed without taking the motor out? thankscad600 wrote:I think Duane had it correct in your other thread. Shift Forks. Re: Wont go into gear....
i read the write up on the archives but it DOES go into gear, just not at high RPMS..

Re: Wont go into gear....
I believe the oil pan can be removed with the engine in the frame. If anything, you will need to remove the engine cradles. But the engine will still be supported in the frame if you have to do that.
The only thing I can think of for the high RPM issue are the shift forks, shift dent arm, clutch pack.

Re: Wont go into gear....
I think you have clutch drag...(not fully releasing)
and that issue you metioned with your shift pedal??
Ain't helping none.

ahhhh that is deff what it is, how do i fix this? B/C the clutch would slip sometimes when i was at high RPM and gave it WOT, which is weird.reelrazor wrote:I think you have clutch drag...(not fully releasing)

Adjust the clutch properly (been covered here on this site-search it).tampaFZR600 wrote:ahhhh that is deff what it is, how do i fix this? B/C the clutch would slip sometimes when i was at high RPM and gave it WOT, which is weird.
See if the problem gets better. If, not, you will likely need to get the clutch apart and inspect the a) basket for notchiness b)steel plates for warpage c) friction plates for wear.

Are shift forks replaceable without removing the motor?

Re: Wont go into gear....
you asked if the shift forks can be replaced while the motor is inside, that is a tutorial on how to do it
Re: Wont go into gear....
are you using the clutch to shift if so try it with out the clutch easist was to explaine is to rev up in 1st lift up on the shifter while accelerating then roll off the throttle quickly and it should shift if its the clutch not dissengaging. my self i always power shift it feels smoother to me. but this should tell you if its the clutch or the forks.

Re: Wont go into gear....
power shifting is how i described it you just shift it without the clutch. when you pull up on the shifter while accelerating it wont shift till you come off the throttle when the pressure is off the trans it shifts quite smothly i might ad then you hammer on and go through the next gear eliminating the possibility of the clutch draging so if it works its your clutch if it doesent its your trans. its just like using the clutch to shift but you dont. you would need it to start off though.
