That's the chain you need; just not sure you want to deal with people like that.

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
What type of chain do I need for a 13/55 setup?
Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
The chain is the chain, a 428; you'll probably need to trim some links off.
Now. You're dropping from a stock 19 front sprocket to a 13 sprocket, a reduction of 32%. That also means your engine speed for a given road speed and gear is going to go up by 46%. Do you really need this? First gear may be unusable, highway speeds even in 6th gear may be screaming.
Why do you want to change your gearing so drastically?

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
Wait a minute...We're talking about an FZR600, right? If so, the stock gearing is 15/45 with a 530 chain-not 428.

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
I don't believe the nice man has ever actually specified what his bike is; I've been going off his description of his current gearing. I've never heard of a 530 55-tooth rear sprocket stock on ANYTHING, but the 400s were stock with 55-tooth 428s.

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
Sorry guys I wasn't specific. 1998 FZR-600. I just picked it up for $650 and it needs a little work. It was the only thing I could afford for my first bike with my own money since my parents don't stand behind me on motorcycle riding. I did not gear it like this, this is simply how I bought it.
So a 428 chain is what I'm looking for? Would it be best to go back to stock gearing? What about just changing the rear sprocket back down to something useable?

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
Like Sweekster said, if you're working on a 600, stock gearing is 15/45 with a 530 chain (or 520 conversion). Ignore everything discussed to date about 428 chain and 55 tooth rear sprockets.

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
I checked out the sprockets and it came out to a 13/55 unless there is more to it than just literally counting the teeth?
Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
Should be stamped on the side of the sprocket...

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
ouch, now I feel like an idiot... but yes it says 55 on the rear sprocket
Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
That's basically stunt-bike gearing. Is that what you want? Easy wheelies-no top speed? As Don said above..."first gear may be unusablel".asdfghwy wrote:ouch, now I feel like an idiot... but yes it says 55 on the rear sprocket

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
That definitely isn't what I want. This is my first bike and I can only imagine the kind of problems I'll have with such rigorous gearing. If I changed the rear sprocket down to 44 or 45 would that be sufficient enough to get it as close to stock as possible?
Also, while running I realized the front sprocket was moving at what seemed a normal pace but at sometimes it would "bog" down (lose speed) then catch back up. What could that mean?
* there is no chain on the bike currently.

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
No chain? You could get a 520 conversion kit from Sum of All Parts <--click there. Comes with new front and rear sprockets along with a chain. I also suggest getting a rivet type master link (<--Click there) as well.

Re: How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem
How hard is a new sprocket / chain install? I know a chain install is around $40 which I assume it's something worth having a shop do but what about sprockets?
