Good job Duane. Glad you got it running better. Dealing with the misterious carb problems is the only thing I really hate about working on these old bikes.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

best way to clean carbs is to open them up and let them soak in ZEP over night or drench it in some engine degreaser, or brake cleaner. I dont care much for carb cleaner lol
glad to hear you got the issue cleaned up. did it help your low-end come alive more?

I'm pretty sure Duane knows how to clean carbs. And do you not read posts before posting replys??

"it seems as the bike now wastes no time getting to red line. No flat spots at all."

Congrats Duane! Maybe now you'll keep her. :)

Thanks guys.

The good thing is I didn't have to soak them. I am going to clean my tank again though (might try what Mega did). The low end issue cleared up when I swapped out the Yoshi header (which is now on Mossy's race bike) for the stock and functioning exup header. We'll see how much it impresses me over time to determine if I keep it or not. It's not going up for sale any time soon either way though

sweekster wrote:So...today's a holiday. I had some time. Decided to take the carbs off the bike and maybe swap in some stock carb jets to see if that would help my drive ability issues. Open them up and the reason why it's acting the way it is is VERY apparent. I guess I didn't do that good of a job cleaning the inside of the tank. I cleaned clumps, yes clumps, of old gas out of the carbs. 3 blocked pilot jets and 1 broken emulsion tube retaining bolt. Gave them a good cleaning, replaced the bolt with one from my bag of carb spares, and reassembled. Poured in some seafoam in the tank and I had to prime the carbs 4 times (basically turning the key and letting the fuel pump click and then repeating that every 5 minutes) and it fired up. This was problem it seems as the bike now wastes no time getting to red line. No flat spots at all.

Turned out to be a good day..

hmmmm didnt I say something about tank crap? :hyprocrite

glad to hear dude, must be nice to have a big bucket of spare carb parts!!! :shocker

Small update:

Had to get a new battery. Done and it fires right up now. Took the bike out this morning (6 AM) and put 25 miles on it. Having 1 less gear and being able to go 85 in 3rd with a lot more to go felt a little weird but otherwise it was great. No flat spots in the RPM at all but it's still a bit rich-I can take care of that I think. I seem to have the front end a little too stiff but that can be fixed as well.

But my bottoms fatter than its ever been.LOL
Your yoshi header had a split in weld and flat bottoms which wouldnt help either.
Bolted straight on my bike lost 7hp everywhere so I can understand Sweeks frustration with them.
It had to have jet kit and pods to get the power all the way through and torque.
spent two full days on dyno finding it all.Not worth it for the road but the track comes down to fractions of seconds.
I have already come 2nd by .07sec and had a win by .08sec
7/100 and 8/100
these are results that even the spectators arnt sure who won.
Good drive at a constant power curve makes a great street bike and thats what the exup delivered.
Remember these bikes had a usable bottom end and mid range and 145crank ponies at a time when gsxr1100s had less stock.
This design was so good it stayed the same from 1989 to 1996 and changed very little when fzr became yzf
I wouldnt run my setup as a road bike.it just to aggressive and hard work to ride .
Sweeks bike on stock pipes will sit at 60 in 5th and then role on and pass a car without thinking about it.
Mine will do the same but I need to feather my throttle and accept bursts of traction breaking power at different spots.
Mine would also be unridable on street tyres in the wet.Its a handfull on race wets on the track.
Mine would also tear road tyres apart.Slicks last me 120miles and they are toasted.
Mine would need service stations every 100miles max.

Horses for courses.
Duane got the black stallion.

In case anyone was wondering.

Yep...still runs and occasionally gets ridden. Haven't done anything to it cosmetically past the rotors and wheels. Hell, I haven't even put turn signals on it yet. No time to deal with any of that now anyway. The bike isn't leaving me any time soon (if ever) so there's no rush.

It's just such an unassuming bike. Not flashy, not arrogant, but plenty of power... a "sleeper" if you will.

A classic design and style. One of those bikes that you can keep for quite some time.

when I started shopping for my first bike I had a line on an fzr1k, I think it was a 89 or 90. It didn't run and I only saw it in the dark, there were snapped bolts all on the top end, some dents in the frame and oil coming down on the header but I talked him down to 250 DOLLARS!!! if he could show me it could turn over with a jump. I wanted to ride, not pick up a project and the budget was tight so I turned him down before he turned it over. After reading this I actually checked with a mutual friend to see if it was still sitting in his garage, the guy had joined the army and nobody had a way of getting a hold of him anymore. In the daylight it was probably even more of a nightmare but dang does 140hp sound like fun, my 600 sometimes runs out of guts before I do. I'd like to be scared now and again.

and is that a 900rr tail section?

Unassuming, non flashy, the "sleeper" is what I like. There's also Unique. Not very often you see an FZR-much less a fox-eye 1000. My previous bike, for those who don't know, was a beat up 92 FZR 600 that looked bad but ran great. I can't say that I outgrew it. It was a fast bike. I just wanted a bike with more "stature" and all it's bodywork-which my 600 didn't have. I've ridden a good amount of bikes in my day. Even the mighty ZX-14. That's a fast big bike. Considered buying one BUT I wanted to stay with old school cool. 145hp is a lot of power and that number sounds great but this is also a 520lb bike and that takes getting used to. It's not lightning fast like a Busa or ZX-14 or R1 (all of which I have ridden multiples times) and it's a bit more to handle in the corners when you first ride it but the power is there and usable regardless of it's weight. I bought this one because it was cheap and it was all there. Still not regretting that decision. No tail swaps or anything like that for this bike as long as I own it. Again, old school cool.

Ok off the soap box now

And yes Will, that is an early 900rr rear tail section on that bike in the link
