Re: valve job
I'm guessing your reffering to a valve adjustment. in short it consists of pulling the valve cover(half to remove stuff to get to it.) checking the valve clearance with a feeler gauge. then reshiming the ones that are out of spec, and putting everything back together. I don't know price because nobody touches my bike but me

No, his valve seals are shot. He needs new valves, seals and the works...

Re: valve job
You'll have to learn sometime. You can't just buy a new motor every time a valve job comes up.megaloxana wrote:Instead of doing a valve job on mine, i just bought a 3000 mile motor for $350 shipped

Well at least try and give the impression of learning to do it at your leisure LoL
Re: valve job

I've blessed to own 3 FZR's that did not need valve adjustments, one with a fresh motor, one that had recently been done, and another that runs to well to need one

Re: valve job
How can you tell if you need a valve adjustment anyway? Loss in power? Dead spots? Bad gas mileage?

Re: valve job
generally you get crappier mileage, it doesnt run as hard...and it gets really hard to start due to the valves being so far out of adustment

Re: valve job
Let's make sure we don't confuse "valve adjustment" and "valve job".
Valve adjustment is simply checking the clearance betwen the top of the valve and the cam shaft when the valve is closed. Intake and Exhaust have different tolerances. This is something most people can do themselves. It consists of purchasing shims of different sizes that go underneath the cap that goes between the valve stem and the cam shaft. Removal of the cam shafts is required.
"Valve job", at least in this case, consists of new valve seals, valves and head machining to match the angles on the head to the new valves. He was quoted $250. Hopefully this will cure his oil burning problem. His bike is the "mosquito-killer".
