How to Fix brake resoivor/cylinder problem

I bought this bike (1998) for $600 with 15k. Needs some minor (I hope things) and this is one of them.



where can I get a replacement for the circled?

That isn't a FZR master cylinder (Note the radial reservoir). My guess is a yzf600. There should be a rubber gasket and underneath it a snap ring to take that part out. Look on bikebandit.com for it.

Yea, you're right I forgot the include that. The previous owner had an yzf600 cylinder installed.

Now, both the rear/front brakes are held tightly onto the wheel (making it hard to move the bike around) is it because of that broken piece + needs to be bled?

i have a mc just like that and its missing that part. I looked and could never find that part available. i believe mega looked with me

Oddly, Yamaha doesn't show this part on its street bike fiches. The race bike parts books are a different matter. Call up Rick at Accu-Products.com, and ask for a "Joint" - 2VN-2582A-50, US$5.76. This part is for a '97 TZ250, but the circlip, boot, and o-ring are the same p/ns as those shown for the '99-2006 YZF600R.

So the front MC parts are coming in soon. I decided to bleed/flush the rear brake and it went and worked exactly as the instructions listed right down to the last step but the problem is the pads aren't moving in/out they seem as if they are just stuck on the wheel whether im pressing on the brake or not. What could it be?

Your pistons are fouled / corroded. Pull the caliper off and clean the pistons.

So, is the wheel locked?

When they are properly working, they will only retract a very small amount (thousanths of inches).

That retraction is entirely dependent on the square piston seal 'cocking' under pressure and returning to normal when no pressure.

For this to work the pistons and the bores need to be CLEAN. And, the fluid needs to be an even film around the piston(behind the seal).

One would think that getting the fluid to fill all the space behind the seal would just be a matter of pumping up the brakes, BUT, the seals won't allow air OUT either....and air gets trapped in the space between the piston and bore. This is the place where that last little bit of sponginess lies, when bleeding shows no air.

Take the caliper apart, clean it up very well (use Bra-Kleen-the red can if you can find it anymore and a well worn scotchbrite).

And, on re-assambly make sure everything is dripping wet with new clean brake fluid. ALWAYS start the fill/bleed cycle with the pistons pushed all the way in.

I got the front calipers off but I'm having a lot of trouble trying to disassemble them. The parting flange bolts are nearly impossible for me to get out. What can I do?

Secondly, as you can tell from the pictures the calipers are VERY grimy what can / can't I submerge in soapy water and clean with a wire brush / wipe off etc

IF you are taking them all the way apart, you can submerge everything. The parting flange bolts WILL be tight/tough to crack loose. Get a quality allen socket to fit them. Hang the calipers back on the fork legs to hold them and use a decent length ratchet and tap on the handle to break the split bolts loose.

A toothbrush, scotchbrite(used) and brake parts cleaner will do wonders

The stock front on the US 1WG bikes was I believe a 16; you may have a -1 sprocket put on by a PO. The 55-rear strongly suggests this is a stock 428 chain.
