TIRES!! 110/70-17 front, 150/60-18 rear ????

Post by Hawker »

I've been looking for some new skins for the FZR400, and I can't believe that the only options in the stock sizes are the Bridgestone BT014 (soon to be discontinued, but too damn soft anyway), and some chinese Shinko brand. All of the rest of the big manufacturers don't have anything listed on their websites in those sizes. Am I missing something here?

Does anyone have a full list of all available tires in the 110/70-17 front and 140 or 150/60-18 rear? I'm not a fan of varying from stock sizes when it comes to tires, and I am not much interested in doing a rim/swingarm swap either. I just need something black, round, of the correct size, and able to handle commuting duty without wearing out too fast. This bike will never see a race track.

The 110/70-17 front isn't really an issue; it's finding a 140 or 150/60-18 rear that is turning out to be damn near impossible.

I too do a lot of straight up commuting miles, and this is why I don't want a BT014. That level of stickiness would just be an expensive waste for me. The only Sportmax that I can find on Dunlop's site is the Roadsmart, and while it appears to have the characteristics that I am looking for, it is a 160/60-18. I don't think that this will fit the stock rim and swingarm.

I may end up trying out a set of those Shinko's. Even if they are crap, they will at least be cheap.

I have not used these tires myself but there is a little known secret called Avon Tyres and they make a tire combo that fits your needs. The AV56 Storm ST Sport Tire. We do have one member here on the forum who has had great results with it (ReelRazor).

Click here to see the sizing chart.

Another option for you is what I just got from BikeBandit. Shinko 006 Podium. They were like $150.00 shipped for the pair and apparently they are an older Pirelli compound that Shinko bought. Here's a link if you wnat to check them out.

you guys want bridgestone bt45s, they're a long lasting tyre made pretty much for commuting and they come in sizes that fit the fzr. http://mc.bridgestone.co.jp/en/products ... nroad.html
fzr660/400: fzr400 3en1 frame, 3en2 swinger, custom single seat subframe, fzr660 motor conversion, APE adjustable cam gears, full D&D 4-2-1 exhaust, falicon clutch basket, ignitech ignition, R6 front end with tz250 wheel, ohlins shock, storz steering damper, tzr250 rear wheel.

weighs 166kg wet (25kg lighter than my stock fzr600).

I have the Avon AV56 in 150/70-18 on my bike. Loove it! It is going on double the miles I was getting from the Bt014s and hasn't 'squared off' any. It grips really really well and wears like iron. The profile feels very nice on my bike. I have a matching front on order at this time.

(and the ONLY motive I have for hyping them is that I want them to continue to offer this phenomenal tire for at least a few years)

aren't the BT045s bias ply?

Here's a picture from last weekend...somewhere between 5-6000 miles on it:

Avons, huh? I have a set of Avon AM26 Road Riders on my wife's '86 CBR400R Aero. I had a set of BT45's on her bike before that, and I didn't like them. Both are bias ply, but that's what that bike was designed for. I won't put a bias ply tire on the FZR.

If you have to take off the chain guard to fit a 160, then that's a no-go. The cops around here are absolutely anal when it comes to bike equipment, and a missing chain guard will get me a ticket. Any road-race compound is also no good, since due to time commitments I do pretty much all commuting and very little spirited pleasure riding (although I do make a point of scrubbing the tires to the edges every so often - I hate chicken strips).

Pirelli sport demon(sports tour) - I don't see this tire on Pirelli's web site; do they still make them? Does anyone remember what the original Pirelli Dragons were like? Soft, medium, hard? There are some NOS 150/60-18's on eBay right now:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0016378561

I really don't know about the Shinkos. I've read some reviews that say that they take a long time to warm up and do not grip well when cold. I live in Saskatchewan, and do a lot of cool weather riding (this morning, for instance, was only 12 Celsius).

I am going to have to look further into those Avon AV56's. The 150/70-18 in that picture sure looks meatier than the 140/60-18 that is currently on my bike. Reelrazor, are you getting a 110/70-17 front to match, or are you upsizing slightly to a 120 to go with your upsized rear?

if you do a lot of commuting, you can run a 120/150 combo with Pirelli Diablo Stradas

I am going with a 110/70-17 on the front. The 120 is not rated for my rim width. I am going with the /70 because my current /60 is too 'round' a profile in my opinion.

The Avon 150 rear actually measures 157mm on my rim. I don't run a chainguard, but I tried it. All it would take is a little notch to make it fit without rubbing. It is about 3mm from my brake stay in stock position.
