FZR600 low-RPM issues

Post by Lil Freek »

Hey hey

I'm new to biking (roadbikes) and I just bought a used FZR600 from my friend.

I'm not 100% sure what could cause this, but it seems as though any driving done under 4000rpm causes the bike to stall out. Smells REALLY rich and I have to clutch in, punch the gas and drop the clutch to get it to go. So long as I keep the RPMs above 4000, it seems to ride alright.

Carbs were jetted from 4000 and up last year, and 0-4000 this spring (I'm assuming this might be the cause of the problem)

Any other ideas as to why the bike sputters under 4000 and stalls out?

Thanks!!

Hmm. It's going to sound "special", but where's the air filter on the bike?

It's a 1991. I'm quite the noob to this bike stuff. Good with cars, so I'm sure some of the knowledge transfers?

Thanks!

Air filter is under the gas tank cover. If you have a large black box in front of the gas tank that's the airbox, and the the filter can be removed by taking out the 4 screws holding on the intake. If there's no black box but either 2 or 4 open filters, you have pods.

Oh... I just looked on fzrarchives for the instructions on how to check air filter.
Sorry ashton, after seeing the pictures of how to access the air filter, I now understand what you're writing. I'll hopefully be home early-ish tonight and have a chance to remove the gas-tank cover while it's still light outside. I'll check the filter and clean/replace if necessary.

This is going to be a bit slower than usual. Work is crazy and school is starting up again.

Thanks for the help - I'll chime in again after I've checked the air filter

so i checked the filter, it's brand new and nicely oiled. It's a good quality K&N filter.

I turned on the bike today, and it sounds like crap, like there's only a few cyl. firing (sounds much like a dirtbike).

I'm going to call the mechanic who did the tune-up and carb-jetting and have him pick up the bike and fix it. My buddy had it running fine last year, and now it's not working properly anymore.

culprit found. Dying/dead coils were the reason behind the super-rough idling and the stalling.

The shop is trying to get rid of the last little bit of rough-idle, but otherwise, major problems are solved :)

My 1997 FZR600 did the whole "dirtbike" thing periodically if I hadn't ridden it in a while. The thing I got that solved that was a $20 battery float charger. When it's parked for more than a day or two I leave it on the float charger to keep the battery topped off. Our bikes usually seem to run like crap with a half charged battery.

Well that's shite. I don't really have access to a plug, outside :(
I know there's an outlet about 30ft from my bike, but since I live downtown, I'm not sure if I'd wanna leave anything worth money out in the open without it being locked down.

so it's riding a bit smoother... the coils were replaced.

But it seems to have hesitation under 4000rpm, still. If I gently add throttle, it's seems better, but if i try to punch it under 4000, there's severe hesitation.

From reading the manual, it sounds as though i might need to adjust the idle screw or the choke (which i can't find in a manual)

Mechanic said the carbs were fine (after disassembling them again). He and my friend test drove the bike for 20-30min, and now it's hesitating again after about 5min of my driving it. Maybe I'm a tard? But I can't see what I'm doing wrong. The bike stalls a couple times at low RPMs when it's heating up, but once up to running temp, it doesn't stall anymore when the choke is all the way off.

Its either you have a fowled spark plug you need to replace...
or your carbs need a good sync...

replace the spark plugs...
and sync the carbs...

Since he replaced the coils, I'm assuming he checked the plugs. But I'll check them when the sun bothers to show face again
