Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
Are you sure it's not the cam chains that you're hearing?
I've never heard an FZR transmission whine.

Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
or intake whine
Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
just thinking... the whine doesn't vary with engine rpm... it varies with bike speed. so I don't think it's cam chains.

What condition are your chain and sprockets in?
Is the chain properly tensioned?

Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
Can you put the bike up on a rear stand and spin the wheel?
Could also be your rear wheel bearing going south.

Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
wheel bearings are cheap(even the good ones from all balls) and pretty easy to swap out so lets hope thats it!

Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
Mine has a louder 2nd gear and 6th gear whine then any of the other gears ..... well it looks like a little extra wear on those 2 gears .... After i installed a new DID chain and new sprockets , the whine was not near as bad , but it was still there ... The guy across town put a new non-sealed drive chain on his bike and said it made it whine louder then before .... Tranny design wear & tear , worn drive chain and sprockets , it's gonna whine up a storm .
Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
Ok this will sound strange. I had a similar whine on my Z750 the was really apparent above 5000rpm. I adjusted the chain and changed the oil...no more whine.

Re: transmission whine... normal for these bikes?
get some loud exhaust , that whine will go away instantly. LOL anything with a gearbox is gonna whine so i would get used to it, you may try some full synthetic oil to quiet it down a little .
