Hey
My battery isnt charging and I have replaced the rectifier but it didn't fix the problem. So I guess it must be the alternator, I'm I correct in assuming this or could it be something else. Also the motor is out being dismantled atm is there anyway I can test teh alternator when the bike isn't running? And could it be something else like the magneto or something?? I'm not very mechanical so any advise would be appreciated.

Order to check things:

i suggest getting a Voltmeter if you don't have one currently

1 Your battery could be toast, check the voltage on it before starting, then while the bike is running take a measurment, see if the level increase/decreases/stays the same

2 If it's not charging while running/riding you most likely need a new Stator (aka Magneto)

3 Those are the easy fixes If you still have a problem you will need to start checking voltage levels on other things

You can test the stator by checking it's Ohms. I will look for the link and post it here.

Down towards the bottom there is a section that talks about checking the combinations of white wires. That is a stator check. You can do that with the stator out of the bike.

The stator is the white wires with 3 clips. check the ohms on those, NOT the pickup coil which has two wires. And I won't tell you how I know that....

Biggest Issue by far on FZR's is the Alternator to loom plug!!!

The plug is usually located near the battery overflow pipe, LH side when sitting on the bike, behind the LH side panel under the seat, should be white/clear in colour. It's location leads to battery acid splashing-causing the corrosion.

They corrode and increase resistance, robbing you of volts! I replaced all the plugs and pins and resoldered every joint for the Alternator!

Fixed!!

+1. When I bought my bike it hadn't corroded as much as it had MELTED the two connectors together. That was fun extracting the wires and stuff. Not.
