NO SPARK

Post by tampaFZR600 »

Ok, this motor, we know nothing about. We got a battery for it and charged it. It has good fuel, fuel pump works. replaced the spark plugs. When we went to check for spark...there is none. What is the most common problem when not getting spark? Wires? coils? And how would i test them to see what is wrong. thanks -D

A) check fuses

B) Take the primary leads off the coils and key the ignition 'on' and check for battery voltage.

Same thing with me after mine had been sitting for a few months and i tried to start it, same thing, no spark, i pulled off the stator cover to visually check the pickup and it looked old with a little surface rust and buildup. So i took some fine grit sandpaper and got the surface rust off, then i took 80 grit sandpaper to the raised bumps on the flywheel because it had some surface rust on too. Took me about 45 minutes, including the time it took to take it apart and put it back together. It cranked right up. So check that out too

When you're checking for spark, make sure that all the plug wires are grounded. If you have all of them disconnected from the plugs except for the one you're testing then you wont get spark(or extremely weak). Anyway just a heads up.

We got it to spark nicely with some new plugs and putting the stator on :duh:

What he ^^^^ said is exactly what my problem is, took off the stator cover and the rotor is F'd up. I didn't know the stator had so much to do with getting the right spark order until i read up. I guessing since it's not getting the right contact, the spark pattern is all wack...RIGHT??? I'm a noob, i donno screwy

if i remember the FZR stator assy right (i might be getting confused with something else) there are 3 small bumps, and 1 long bump, this tells the cdi which order to fire the spark in because the flywheel moves with the crank, crank moves the pistons..blah blah blah. So I believe the long bump denotes cyl 1 top dead center. So it fires #1 when it gets the long pulse, and it fires 4-3-2 after that (or whatever the firing order is). So if just one of them is dirty then i think it confuses the CDI because it's not getting the pulse it's supposed to.

yea i was searching today, and someone said exactly that, it controls the CDI, so i guess i need a new stator and generator

Why do you want to change the stator? The stator is the generator (or alternator), it just charges the battery and runs through the rest of the system, so if your stator contacts are bad then the stator won't charge the battery but the bike will still run fine, it will just run off of the battery until it dies. You have spark now, so there's no need to replace anything, unless you tested the stator and it's bad.

i'm getting spark, but the stator is really messed up and the rotor actually has a huge chunk out of it, like when the stator cover hit the ground, the broken pieces, and whatever other road rocks, got in between the stator and the rotor and ate up the metal. When the motor turns over, you can hear the stator scratching the rotor

I mean, besides the carbs, whatelse could be causing it not to start?

HOLY SHIT...i'm such a noob, i just discovered that the ROTOR=FLYWHEEL..... WOW. so my flywheel is completely distroyed, the inside of it has two huge holes in it...

if you're getting spark, it might just be a carb issue, unless you've fouled the spark plugs, when you test the spark are you testing the plugs that are in the engine? or do you have a spare plug you are putting in? I know you just replaced the plugs, but If the gas in the tank was old enough (like over a year old) you could have fouled the new plugs. Otherwise it sounds like a carb issue. Have someone clean your carbs.

Are you checking spark on all cylinders? there are two coils on the bike, one for cylinders 1 and 4 and one for 2 and 3, so if you're checking spark on cylinder 1, there is a possibility that you don't have spark on 2 and 3, and then it would just putter and die, like it was trying to start but not starting.

Check to see if there is fuel coming from the fuel pump, you could have an old filter or a bad fuel pump.

I know the fuel pump works, and we are using a make shift gas can, so the fuel is clean. We just cleaned the carbs, but i think it might have gotten some bad fuel b/c when we drained the bowls, the fuel was nasty lookin. We are going to take them apart again wednesday. I still think it has a lot to do with the stator and flywheel

never good, get some carb cleaner or carb dip and take those carbs apart.
