Re: Bringing the 1k Back to life
Another small update:
After a good and way too long search I finally located a set of exup cables and was able to swap out my Yoshimura full header and swap in my FZR exup header. It took so long because, well, they're hard to find. Most people who have exup bikes keep the exup. Ordering from Yamaha was going to be a long and costly process because they list the cables with two separate part numbers for the FZR1000 and want $63 bucks a piece for them. To add to that they are also back ordered and would take probably 2 months to show up. This was the same scenario for YZF1000R ThunderAce cables as well. I happened to be looking at the 99 R1 microfishe and noticed the exup servo is in the very same place on that frame as my FZR frame. Both cables are also listed under one part number and around $85 bucks for the set. Long story short, I ended up getting the cables from someone on the R1 forum who was parting out a 99 R1 and they were an exact fit.
You can see the difference in headers here
The Exup Header installed.
That made a big difference in low end power. To put it blunty, I now have low end. The power output is a lot more linear and the bike now wants to go when you let the clutch out instead of struggling to get to 4000rpm-and this was just going around the neighborhood with an open header (which is also almost twice as quiet than with the yoshi header). It even shifts smoother. I still need to go back in and tune some more as my idle still seems low but I'm quite happy with how it's progressing. I also need to make a decision on whether to order a $30 exhaust gasket (which is currently backordered) to use my stock pipe or have a mid pipe made to use my Yoshi pipe-which should cost roughly the same as the gasket. More than likely I'll have a mid pipe made. Here is WIkipedia's explanation of what exup is and it should explain why made such a big thing about swapping headers. More to come..

Re: Bringing the 1k Back to life
you should scratch up the headers and spray it with some high temp paint or grill paint so it doesnt rust.
they need to make some zinc spray (they coat metal parts in zinc to prevent rust)
wtf?

Re: Bringing the 1k Back to life
Ok Small update and minor set backs...
The bike has gone through a bit of a change since the last time. The exhaust swap has been completed and it's now running with the a full stock FZR1000 system with the exup valve functioning as it should. The quietness of the bike has taken a bit getting used to. Still has a slight flat spot between 6000 and 7500 but it's only noticeable when i'm really on the throttle. Normal riding is fine (yes..I've actually taken it out on the road-believe it or not). I'll play around with some needle settings and hope to solve that issue soon.
I've discovered that I need fork seals now (set back 1) and I've had to order a fork spring compressor kit to be able to properly to the job. Should be here soon. On to set back #2...I've always questioned the front brakes and felt they were a bit "flighty". Decided to go about putting in new pads and discovered that the piston seals on torn up and 2 of the 6 pistons were stuck in the left caliper. Seal kits are outrageously priced so I'm looking into a replacement set of calipers.
I've also done a few cosmetic changes as well which consists of giving the wheel lips the polished look (You've all seen my How To Thread on the subject)and blacked out the center of the front and rear rotors. Gave it a much nicer look I think. Here's a current pic..
That's all for now..
