r6 muffler options

hey all. about two weeks ago i found a steal of an r6 header on ebay, it should now be sitting at thatkid's house for modification. i'm not looking at doing the header/full exhaust (including jetting my carbs) for a while, this deal was just too good to pass up.

i've been searching around a little bit to see what my options are as far as r6 cans go (a lot more options than the ol fzr). the problem is they are expensive as HELL. i've been looking around on ebay and on craigslist just to see whats available. this post is mostly aimed at those few that have done the swap and went with r6 cans. couple questions i have so far. what is the difference in the years? the header swap that thatkid is doing is for the 99-01. the cans i have been looking at (and most interested in) seem to be for 05+. for example, this which looks very motogp ish, or other shorty cans like this. now obviously running a shorty pipe is going to be loud, so some additional baffling will be a must. as far as differences in years go, was it pipe diameter? or the addition/removal of exup systems? or bracket location?

i'm basically going to be looking for the best looking shortly pipe for the buck, with minimal alterations to make it fit. also if anyone knows of any good place to look for cheap cans, lets hear em!

When I was looking at cans I decided to go with the 2007-2008 stock R6 muffler. check my sig pic.

It looks cool, somewhat loud, and it doesnt kill my ears when i ride.

The problem with some loud pipes is they kill your ears after awhile, and cops love to pull people that attract attention like that, kinda sucks if you don't have a license like me.

Most of the used stock shorty's like Billy_Awesome's I've seen seem to have the Exup valve incorporated into the pipe because they newer models have catalytic converters built into the header where the collector is on our bikes.

Another option is to keep a look out for an awesome standard can (take my Yoshimura RS-3 Carbon fiber for example ) that's a little damaged and make your own shorty out of it.

Something like this. Drill the rivets, cut off the damaged section, re-rivet, mount, and when you hook up your header, make the midpipe (which you'd probably need to make anyway) with a flat flange on it to mate up to the inlet on the exhaust can.

It is in fact chilling in my basement mingling with the other headers. She was shy at first but getting along quite well now.

I think pimpmyfzr has a hacked up yoshi he was looking to get rid of. Otherwise see about any universal. I can always weld on a reducer or expander to the end of the r6 header before shipping it back to have it match up. I do kinda like the stock r6 can though. The shorty's.

I had the 06-07 short can and it was nice but I couldnt get it mounted like it was on the R6 so I sold it. It sounded great and good performance for sure. I went back to my yoshi and chopped it and is louder.

I run an aftermarket can from an early R6 - used, but in A1 condition, £40 from Ebay. I use Thundercat front pipes (4-2-1) which necessitated a small bracket be made to fit the rear mount, and the intermediate pipe is a Thundercat aftermarket item too. Easy fit chum.

Sooooooo yzf6r headers are a direct bolt on to the fzr?

Thundercat headers fit, but sit mighty close to the bottom of the motor and require a new bracket fabricating underneath, but otherwise go straight on.

Whats the bracket for, just to hold them in a prone position so they dont hit the engine or what? Anyone on here have yzf headers on their fzr, that could take a pic of the "bracket" so I understand in case I want to do this in the near future.

I'll try and get a pic up so you can see it. At the rear of the headers about 6" before the end of the pipe is a mounting bracket, which mates up with a correspinding bracket on the bike which locates on the frame close to the suspension linkage. Because the 'cat pipe sits a little closer to the engine they didn't line up, so rather than fanny about with welding I just made up an alloy bracket about 1.5" long to mate them up. Other than this, the 'cat pipes physically went straight on.

heh, i knew she'd fit in well, i'll look around a little more at the options, but basically the inlet diameter from the 99-01 r6 and the newer ones are about the same? that should help broaden my options a bit. nate, whenever you get done with the header, shoot me a PM before sending it back, that way i can see if i'll need an expander or reducer welded on
