Hey fellas!!

Post by yamaboy »

I'm trying to find a cheaper thermostat/o-ring , and was wondering what coolant it's the best/where to find?, based on your experience..I called the dealership and they want $40 for the t-stat.. That's ridiculous..

Thanks for any feedback .

i took my thermostat in to napa and they matched it up with one. You should do the same.. I refused to pay $40 for mine, I got mine for $7, drilled a hole through it for the bypass because it didn't have one on the new thermo..it was fine. It's napa brand 115 (part number 115, not temperature, it's a regular 180 degree thermo). And you might be able to match up an o-ring too, i can't remember if I had them match up one for me, or if I reused mine.

I bought a new thermostat from the dealer before I realized I could get one from eBay. The NAPA part looks like a good solution.

As for the coolant, I run distilled water with one bottle of water wetter. Dropped my temperature about 10F degrees. Here is a link to a thread discussing some of the different products available for this. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=96&start=0 One question to ask yourself though is - Are you going to try to do any track days? - Most tracks will only let you run straight water, water with water wetter, or water with some other mixture that is similar to water wetter (but I can't remember the name).
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

yeah, accidentally..lol, it just takes a little bit longer for the thermostat to open up. if it ever starts to give me problems on long cruises then i'll go buy another $7 thermo and drill it out smaller

oh, and how do you guys mix in the distilled water? half and half like when mixing it for cars? I also heard someone talk about putting a little laundry detergent in the coolant mix too. How much is put in? Or is it just put in if you don't have distilled water and you use regular water?

Toyota Gen III 3sgte head, not evo. I have a Gen III in my celica. Evo heads are red and don't have the big towers on the front by the cams.

the A2 is the newer Gen B16. the B16A is the JDM version of the engine. yea it is a honda its the 160hp engine that powered the 99-00 Civic Si & SiR. pulled it outta mine after collision. the engine is in great mechanical condition just could use to be cleaned up a bit cosmetically...

JDM is the way to go..the whole reason why i used the Gen III instead of the Gen II, and also because it's newer and was stock in the GT-Four version of my car in japan. I still need an AWD tranny, they are hard to come by, when i changed the clutch in the evo last week, i made a cardboard template of the tranny bolt pattern to see how well it will line up with my block. haven't matched it up yet..can't wait though

Most likely I won't to any track day. Just cruizing, going to work, and some twisties. So for example , where would I find 50% Glycol/50% water (ie. Premixed)? Walmart or Napa? From what I remember from the factory manual normal coolant ,for example Prestone 50/50 cannot be used because it hurts the internals. It needs to have Glycol in it , right??
Thanks for the info guys..U Rock!! RRBike

just bring in your old one when you go to napa to double check my part number, make sure the temp is the same, height, width. And i haven't had any issues with it so far, but I haven't sat in traffic with it yet, or been on any long cruises around the island.
