Biting off more then you can chew...
Let's start this out with the most honest statement that I can make... I know two things about street bikes, jack and spit. Jack just left town. I've been looking for a project bike for a while that my younger brother and I can play with while we learn the in's and out's of street bike repairs. We work on our own cars but decided we would move into a new area of fun, mostly cause our wives were sick of not being able to park in the garage. That being said, I stumbled across a 1992 FZR Genesis Streetfighter Project. The guy says he wants 300 for it, I think... huh.. my wife will spend that on shoes next month... so why the hell not. We go to check it out, and the gentleman tells me, look, I know it's in rough shape, I don't want to mess with it anymore, my wife want's the garage back, gimme 150 and you can have it. What do I do? Hand him 150 and put it in the truck. Why not right? What's $150 bucks? The plastics are trash, but from what I have seen online you can do a R1 conversion kit for under a thousand, so no biggie. The problem is, I start looking at photos online to try and determine a good point at which to begin putting this thing back together, yah, it's in boxes, cept the frame and drivetrain that are all still hooked together. So, while I am looking at these pics, I discover the frame looks nothing like what is on this monstrosity that I have purchased. The engine says Yamaha on it... but other then that at this point I am not even sure wtf I bought. I know how the streetfighter style is supposed to look.. but I was unaware that it would go to the extent of replacing structural parts like the frame. I'm not above saying that there is a damn good chance I just got had, but either way I'm not going through the trouble of hassling the guy over the money. Just curious as to what some FZR aficionado's such as yourself might think? Any suggestions? Having seen the bikes on here I'd like to put the beast back together and ride it, but hell... who knows. Assuming that the engine/tranny/etc are the correct parts, what's it worth parting out for? Maybe I can just get my money back on parts and buy something in better shape I can play with.

+1 on parting it out. It will cost you the price of a used R6 to find all the parts needed to get it going. Just doesn't seem fair sometimes...

Re: Biting off more then you can chew...
FZRs definatly come in all shapes and prices nowadays. Sounds like you bought a completely torn down bike which kinda sux if you don't know what its supposed to look like put together. You can take pictures of your parts and everyone here will probably be more than happy to identify them for you. It will also give us a better idea as to what kind of situation you're in. HOWEVER, it was only $150 so you could prolly get your money back parting it out. Better yet, find another FZR project bike that is put together and then you'll have plenty of spare parts. FZRs are pretty cheap and I don't believe you'll have trouble finding one that will better suit you. Heck maybe you'll end up with two complete FZR's in the end(one for you and one for your bro). Definatly don't be afraid to ask questions, we have a very knowledgable community here thats always willing to help out fellow fzr owners.

Damn, we don't have a "this thread is worthless without pics" smiley. We definitely need pictures of what you have. If it's good stuff, we'll lowball you and get it on the cheap!
At 150 bucks for a pile of parts you really can't go wrong. Forks alone will get you that if they are in good condition. Wheels with decent rubber will fetch about 100. There are lots of little things that are worth more than what you paid if you decide to part it out.
However, if you are looking for a project this definitely sounds like one. Post lots of pics and we'll tell you what we think is the better option for you. Hell maybe you got a YZF instead of an FZR and you really scored.
Did you get a title with it?

You can always part it out and make your money back. If you and your bro want a project it sounds like you have got your hands on one. Post some pics the curiosity is killing us!
Re: Biting off more then you can chew...
So... what if I told you that after some research I discovered that it was the frame for the FZR Predecesor the FZ600... woot.. right? Yes? Righhhhhttt... and by research what I meant to say was late night angry computer surfing while I fought the urge to smash my computer out of pure rage. Kidding. I'll try to link some pics but Im a forum noob and make no promises. If it doesnt work Ill include photobucket links.

Here are the links... since I have no idea if the above links worked

It's not the worst thing on the planet but definately not an FZR. I hope you and your brother are good at electronics its going to need a complete electrical rebuild. I doubt it will run I don't see a CDI and your coil packs are fubar. Transmission system looks partially out of commission. Whats in the box? Battery tray??
wiring loom on ebay with cdi you'll need to check the year
I see a little cafe racer out of it??

It does however look like a long road to rebuild her.
I'm not sure you'd get your money's worth in parts and labor back on that one if you sell it after a rebuild.

Re: Biting off more then you can chew...
Wow...That's an FZ600 alright. You could make that money back by parting it that's for sure. The trend these days with cafe racer builders is to use newer suspensions. There was a guy on the Archives who had a thread of him building a cafe style bike from a yamaha XS frame and using FZR front and rear suspension. So if you are looking for a sales direction that could be one to go with.
Also here's the thread to give an idea

Re: Biting off more then you can chew...
So.. I think maybe I have resigned myself to just parting this thing out, not because I don't want to put the time in though, I think spending too much damn time looking around here has driven me to start looking for a legit FZR that's at least running and turn it into a custom restoration as opposed to a ground up build. If anyone see's anything on this beast that they want let me know and I'm sure we can come to some sort of agreement. Also, if anyone knows of a bike sitting around in the Cali area that they want to part with shoot me a message, I'm in the market and would prefer something I can drive to and tow or drive home as opposed to having shipped. Doesn't have to be pretty, if it will spark and spit and I can make noise with it while I make her pretty again I'll be a happy camper.
Hope all is well, sorry for the general level of nubishness.

Yeah I think you made a good choice to just part it. I really hope you find an FZR. Good Luck

I live in Bakersfield, I'd be willing to drive probably anywhere within 3 hours or so if the deal was good enough. Yah, I bought this bastard off craigslist! Though the guy was listing it as a 92FZR Genesis... and.. well.. clearly it is not. Also, if I do sell any of the crap this thing has (Ill put up better pics of everything tomorrow) I will donate 10% of all of it to the site.
