I thought this was way cool for an oil temp gauge

Post by zero9243 »

Very simple but I still think its cool. I know not everyone is a fan of bolt on mods but I don't think adding an oil temp gauge gets much easier on our motorcycles...

Translates to about $38 US dollars.

does that just replace the oil cap?

that wouldnt be very great because when your riding, you have to look down by your foot to see the temp.
I like the ones with the cable that you can hook up to your triples or add to your dash!

Would this even work for our bikes? Aren't the clutch plates right under the fill cap?

all the thing is, is a cap.
there isnt a rod that sticks out the bottom.
when your riding your bike, oil is thrown everything, including the bottom of the cap, so thats what it gets the temp from.

You're wrong there my friend, it clearly states there is a probe protruding from the bottom. (click the techy stuff tab). It does have our bike listed though...

The more gauges the better there is nothing wrong with a litte accessory add ons. I would use that on my liter bike but the six hundred never gets remotely hot so I assume my oil is just fine.

Ive seen those on a few cruisers. I think its mainly a accessory. Just looking down while riding to check your oil temp doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Shogun,
If the oil is NOT hot enough is just as BAD as being too hot .
The oil Temp you would want to know when 1st starting before you ride off and sitting at a traffic light on a hot day both enable you enough time to glance at the oil guage.

Most of you have cages (Traitors LoL) how often do you watch your oil guage (idiot light )?

It looks a bit crap to me. Not something I would put on my bike. My Exup has survived 17 years whit no oil temp guage. Yamaha-san dident find it nesesery,so why????

Yamaha-san didn't find an accurate tach, a rear shock with any damping, An oil PRESSURE light, or NUMBERS on the coolant temp gauge necessary either.....

I don't really think this kind of gauge would be accurate on an FZR. In normal operating conditions that cavity isn't a sump...it is just oil vapor being evacuated from the clutch plates at the very end of the oil run...which is gonna show hotter than any other place on the engine. It would let you know, though, when something different was going on.

Mine gets an oil cooler as soon as I can swing it, and prolly a line gauge (temp)..

It's not neccessary to keep your eye glued to the oil temp....but a quick glance down after a long hard burn can tell you a lot. A matter of 20 extra degrees can half even the best oils' life. and like Geo said..before riding away it's nice to know you aren't trying to push cold oil at full flow.

Ohh, but we have the quart(?) 'reserve' !! first time I had to switch to reserve on my FZR I coulda turned around and gone back 10 miles....or continued 25....I chose 'continue'. How much you wanna bet I was flagging down trucks looking to buy a gallon outa a can?
