George, I guess my other question would be since the stem is hollow your talking about cutting it flush and using the new threaded rod to go up inside the stem shaft? If I were to press it out then I could use a much thicker threaded rod for a stronger stem with the new fork assembly.

Im ready to do it then.

Looking at some fork assemblies now since my zx6r exhaust keeps getting out bid. Found a couple Im watching but I want to be able to order everything at one time so I may have to wait until tax time.

95,
I used 14mm tool steel threaded rod, I have heard 8mm thro 12mm used since the rod is compressing the bearings which are the bits taking the side loads from the forks.

I have been trying to raise Tony on this but he has gone back to Spain for vacation from his consultancy at Segway, for his memories as to what material & sizes he used..

Yamaha George,

Im going to get a piece of 14mm and 12mm and test both of them in between the triples. Whichever one looks to be better Ill go with. It also depends if I cut or press the old stem out. This is some good stuff and should work out great.

Im going monday to pick up the threaded rod. If everything goes right this week Ill be able to pick up the r6 forks next weekend. I have some things on ebay selling and hope to have about $400.
I will have a big write up and lots of pics to.

I really want to know how this project works out for you. I think I will be sending Modking my stem for him to fit up with the R1 tree.

I really think that it will be cake. Nothing can be any more difficult than the R6 swinger mod. I will keep you updated because I really think this is a no brainer. There is no reason why you cant do the swap like this.

There is 1 last question....Im wondering about the bars hitting the tank or anything else. Has anyone had any similar problems with their swap? I really want to run the 99-02 R6 but I was thinking 03-05 R6 forks being newer. Do the bars stick out any wider on the 99-02, 03-05 than the stock FZR?

95,
take a look at:-http://www.motomorphic.com

the bike pictured has well as you can read: -
Hi Geo--
I lurk on the chassis design list; I believe that Tony Foale had
suggested that you don't need a stem, just a means to apply preload to
the steering head bearings.  With this in mind, I removed the stem from
my first prototype, and made a couple inserts that fit snugly in the
triples so as to be able to apply torque to the threaded rod passsing
through--I used 10 mm stainless all thread, but applying adequate
preload probably could have been done with 8 mm rod; I didn't have any
handy...
You can see the bike at http://www.motomorphic.com or if you search youtube for
motomorphic.  No pix of the stem-less triples, but it seems to be
completely valid.
ciao--Happy New Year--
jim

Well that says mostly what i have scribbled about all along, BUT I also got 5 other answers to my query about design sizes for this stud option.
a} smallest size 5/16th but a cylinder head stud from a Ducati
b} no need for one long stud two bolts will do
c} use machined stubs to "locate" the bearing inners
c} thread of choice is fine type rather than course to allow more accurate torquing

The torquing bit was from a high level engineer at NASA why thread pitch would effect torque I am not sure about unless he means its load is distributed over a greater surface area of thread.

Hope that helps yo all.

I have been working hard on the web page for swingarm/wheel/shock swap but that was halted by the news of my Mothers death 12 years to the day my Father died, weird old world.

Thanks george! Im getting things together for the swap. There is a place right down the road from me called threads for the south and they have the threaded rod I need. I hope to have time tomorrow to run down there. The R6 forks Im trying to get here by next weekend. So, in a couple weeks will have everything.

Thanks for the posts here george. I will have many pics of the swap for you and document everything.

95,
this just in:-
George
For the stub replacement for the steering stem I used both 8mm and 10mm
rod.  Its only job was to provide some preload on the taper roller bearings,
so the load is minimal.  6mm rod could easily supply enough load but I
thought that it might be too flexible, thus allowing too much variation in
preload.

Regards

Tony Foale

That Guys is a pretty lady in case you were wondering
If it is the machine you are refering too it is a "Big Boys Toy" for the guys who are well heeled, read the blurb some of it is very technically advanced and is the kind of thinking that Eric Buell likes to do but often cannot for fear of being poo poo'd by the mainstream bike press. :deadhorse:
