fzr400 3tj rear wheel on fzr600?

Post by shredex »

I did some research and I found out that the FZR4003TJ has a 160/60ZR17 rear wheel.
are the swingarm dimensions the same on the FZR4003TJ as they are on the FZR600 to allow for a direct wheel/rim swap?

No the swingarms are different dimensions. But it might be possible to swap just the wheel. I'm not sure if anyone has tried it. Yamaha George is currently swapping a 3TJ swingarm and wheel onto his 600.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Something is lurking, waiting, wanting to be built......It calls to me from the darkness....

I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel....Then I realize that it is the train coming to run my ass over....

thats what I meant, to swap out just the wheel.

The problem with that swap is those wheels are hard to come by here in the states and when you do they are pricey. Otherwise it's a good swap. A lot easier with the matching swinger though.

Hi,
As has been said the job is done I am doing the web write up and hope to finish it over Christmas (SAD or what ). Did the Canucs get the 3TJ might be easier to ship from there than the UK/europe

17" gsxr wheels match our spoke pattern nicely may be a whole lot cheaper and easier to find. Th wider rubber will be apigs ear to fit in astandard swinger I would think there is a thread some where on that swap ???????

You've said pretty much everything I'm saying here, George, so this is mainly for any newer guys reading this...

GSXR Rim Swap Thread

We're working on the GSX-R rim write-up. I have limited funds right now so it may take a little longer, but it looks to definitely be cheaper than finding any 3TJ parts in the US.

A 160 rear will fit even on the 18" 3HE (US FZR600) rim, but it kills your handling since the profile is fairly flat. A 150/70R17 on the Suzuki Rim should maintain agility and still provide a little more grip than stock, and a 160 on the Suzuki rim should still have much better handling characteristics than a 160 on a 18" FZR rim.

I have a 150 on my FZR rim right now, and the profile is a little flat. Captain Canuck has the Suzuki rim with a 160 on his '89 non-Deltaboz FZR600 swinger, and aside from brake arm mods, the swinger holds it fine. His tire profile looks a little better than mine (more rounded). I don't think that it's physically possible to go any wider than a 160 within the 3HE (FZR600) swinger, but if you want a tire any wider than that, you might as well go with the YZF600 swinger swap. my2cents

Long story short, do a Suzuki Rim swap or CBR600 F2 rim swap, or go ahead and do the YZF600 swinger swap. 3TJ stuff is pretty and all, but in the USA it's probably a little too rare to be practical.

Since we are on the topic of wheel swapping, I have a 1998 Honda CBR F3 rear wheel on my Fiz. I wish I could tell you more info, but I bought the bike with that on already.

Slayer,
you could tell us if it is 17" and what tyre is on it that would be a start, you are running a standard swinger for the 600 ? so presumably the axle is stock.

All we need to figure out is the part numbers for the CBR rear wheel & cush drive bearings from an internet micro fiche and we can see if it is a slip in or a bearing swap job .

easy really LoL

Suzuki Bandit 600 had the same wheel 96-99 but the size (not the style) stayed the same until really recently...around 05 or 06. Also Katana 600 wheels were the same size from 97 on.....
