Carb Float Height

Post by cad600 »

Anyone know the best way to set the carb float height? I'm redoing the carbs now and have everything back together, just need to set the float height and put the covers back on. Can I measure them while they are in this position? Should I measure the one that is closest to the spring or away from the spring. I got myself a little confused on Factory Pro's web site and just want to check. Plus, could this cause a bike not to start? When I opened them up, the amount of gas that came out of them was nuts. I could ring out two shop rags into a cup and still leave a huge wet spot on the garage floor after. Just wondering.

I dont take the boots off, but thats just me. And as far as draining the bowls, just flip the carbs upside down so the gas leaks out of the over flow tubes.

When I set the height, I tilt the carbs just enough for the floats to lightly compress the needle then I go from there. I use a ruler that I got from Harbor Freight that works awesome for measuring the height. Im pretty sure if the measurment is wack, it can cause the bike not to start (ie..too lean=no fuel).

Rage came up with an awesome trick for checking your float height a while back. He cut a notch out of a credit card to the desired height so you can eyeball it really easily. I didn't bookmark the thread but you should be able to search it down. Good use for all those stupid pre-approved CC offers with the fake card that you get in the mail.

I did something similar. I cut it out of a piece of sturdy cardboard backing from a tool I had bought. Works well.
