YZF/R6 Front Brakes Swap ???

Post by Dragon »

Can someone tell me what difference swapping out your old brake set up to the newer style has?
Is it just a looks thing? I've seen so many do this swap and was just wondering what's the difference you get with the swap. Has any one tested this? :headscratch:
Need some info. on this, if it will be better for my fizz.

Thanks, everyone.

The main part of the swap is the master cylinder. Provides better braking. You could use the newer master with the FZR calipers and have better performing (over stock) brakes.<- That would be a good upgrade for those whose bikes are 1989 and have the single piston calipers on the front. Going with newer calipers in addition to the master is more than just looks. The stock FZR ones are of a 2 piece design where as the r6/r1 blue and gold spots are a one piece design. They are stronger and a little lighter as well. When used in addition with good lines and pads they provide more efficient braking without needing tons of effort.

Now, I need people that have done this mod to back up what Sweek's said.
Did you all notice the difference, as stated ^^^ ?
My fizz stops on a dime when I apply my front brakes, so I want to know if I should spend the money on this swap?

It's you're decision man. You get a larger remote reservoir, a better master cylinder, and one piece calipers. It's going to brake better. I'm sure your brake setup is probably perfectly fine as it is. If you don't want to upgrade to the YZF unit, you could go for some braided lines. This will slightly increase response because they won't flex like the rubber lines.

But the YZF upgrade is cheap, the calipers look better, and you get an adjustable lever. Why not upgrade?

Ok man, I heard ya on the better & larger stuff. I've got braided lines on the fizz already. You got this upgrade on your fizz? Did you do it yourself? If so, how does it feel?
I'm looking into upgrading, but want to know if it's going to make a difference, not just spending money because everyone else is doing it. He say, without proof does me no good. banghead I'm not being a jerk, but ..........

Will the YZF calipers work on the 89 forks though?
Anyone? :headscratch:

They aren't a direct bolt on so No. You'll need 91+ forks. However, I have seen where adapter brackets have been made to allow then to be bolted on to 89 forks.

Sorry to break it to you dude but you have 91+ forks also. The visual difference is not noticeable without having both sets of forks next to each other.

i just swapped them out 2 weeks ago , personally i got them dirt cheap , not too hip on the blue dot , woulda preferred the gold dot <will swap in future > they were very easy to swap <bitch to bleed > overall for just street use i honestly cant tell the differnce , i might still need to rebleed them but as they are right now my old setup worked better , again , i need to rebleed come spring and hopefully the performance will be what i was looking to achieve < THE STOP ON A DIME that was Said of them , but honestly i think sweeks said it best , if the main thing is the master cylinder i would prob just look to swap that out first and see if that makes a differnce ,,

My suggestion would be to try the MC first. You may find that it's all you need (or not) and may not need the calipers (unless you want them).
