You might just want to check the valve cover bolts to make sure they're tight first.

could it be that the O-ring for the valve gasket is bad?
the ring part looks a bit dry rotted

It's not an o-ring necessarily, but if it's "dry rotted", then by all means replace it.

It looks like valve cover gasket to me. I had the same problem once. A new gasket will do fine!

Some times the bolts just need to be tightened. After my top end was done I noticed the same problem on mine and I tightened them and have been fine. Did not need a new gasket.

I completly took the cover off and took a look inside and when I took it off, some beautifuly pure black oil came out
the gasket ring seems to be fine, so I put it back on and tightened it up. wont really know if it did anything until I can ride the bike (its in pieces, taking advantage of the break)

man say have valve clearances checked and put new gasket on, any other solution is asking for trouble. unless you already had valve clearances checked recently. then just replace the gasket. usually some special white goo looking sealer you gotta use for proper seal also, don't know what it's called or where to get it. pay good mechanic at shop good money he do it right.

You just have to make sure the groove is clean with these gaskets. The Yamaha ones have little metal spacers in them so you don't over tighten the gasket.

just in update...
I put my bike back together and road a about 10-15 miles and it doesnt seem to be having the problem anymore after I tightened it...

no, he buys one, then sells it...I think hes had 2 bikes at one time though.
