Are you using OEM replacement or aftermarket, or are you using the 95-99, and R6 style? I just put the R6 style on my bike today, I'm trickle charging the battery tonight, and am going to see if it works tomorrow.

If this is your third VR this summer I would look at the rest of the electrical system. Either that or you are incredibly unlucky.

Also make sure your getting a good ground to your VR. I replaced mine with the R6 unit this weekend. For the time being its working fine. Before the upgrade I had 12 volts at 3k RPM, now I have 14.
