FZR400-YZF600 Build Progress

Well guys and gals, I made an intro a few days ago (new in kansas) and am excited to help get this little bike progressing. I attached a picture in the other thread of when we got it. Yesterday we went ahead and did some mocking up with parts I had laying around (and stole some from other bikes temporarily).

The way it is sitting (with parts in place with temp fasteners) looks like attached. It has an R1 front fairing set up front, the YZF tank and front seat, plus a FZR600 race tail. I am going to cut down the tail and thin it up a bit to give it a sleeker look. i will also raise the R1 fairing up and shift it back some more. Overall I think it's going to look pretty sweet.

What do you think so far?

I'll try to post updates on it as we go. We are having some spark issues right now (none) so we are going to do some of the body fitting while we are waiting on parts to arrive to fix the electrical.

looks good, i like the R1 plastics. is it going to be a race bike? or a tool around towner?
btw, keep an eye on the headlights when you mount the upper, i am still fighting mine to get them aimed high enough to ride at night.

This will be the fiance's bike. She won't be racing it (yet). It's a 95 zyf600 in it currently.

The reason I was asking is that the 97+ models had a TPS sensor on the carbs and used a different CDI which might result in your loss of spark.

I am using the entire YZF drivetrain though the carbs are 2001 versions (we are not hooking up to the TPSensor).

We worked for some time to get the bike to spark and finally were able to get it running. Many thanks to those who helped out.

All our parts tested good on another members bike but they still would not let the bike produce any spark. So we began yesterday by bypassing the start run switch. Still no spark. So we started to bypass the key switch when we noticed that the harness from it had an abraised area about in the mid point. We opened up the protective sheath and sure enough both blue wires (with stripes) were pinched in half. We connected them back together and the bike fired right up!

After three days + of trying everything and not having any luck it came down to a simple wire repair. I am going to be rerouting the harness better then the last owner did to try and prevent this from re-occuring again. Also, once the fiance gets a few weeks in of riding and the weather gets bad enough we will get it back in the shop and start the transformation to a completed bike.

Hopefully come springtime she'll be on a nearly new looking machine.

that is good news, but it also points out a major factor with older bikes & PO's check the simple first , wires & connectors.
My main tools is a cheap digital meter not only with prods but aligator clips and the amount of times i have found corrosion and worn connector & chewwed wires has paid for many a lunch by greatful owners.

Being ex -mil i got used to KISS principal Keep It Simple Stupid and it works.

Got the carbs rebuilt and the sand out of the bottom of the bowls. Remounted the tank further forward and down so the gap is reduced between the frame and it's bottom. Bike will actually idle now after syncing them.

Tank is missing the intank pump and I was considering replacing it but was told the external pump works fine so far. Cleaned and resealed the seal between the sending unit and tank. Hopefully got the leak fixed.

Did some trimming on the frames inner neck web to allow the throttle cables to clear better and work smoother.

Mounted up the YZF tailsection and mocked up a solo filler on it. I did this before I fixed the tank so now I need to relocated it all about an inch forward. Will probably change the whole mess out for a newer tail section soon anyway.

The few times I got the bike to not flood (from dirty carbs) the bike ran great. First gear just rolling into it the bike would stand on up. Clutch seems a bit grabby and clunky so shifting in the air isn't smooth.

Ordered lowering links today. Lowered the front one inch in the triples. Need to put new fork seals in the right side.

All in all considering I am also doing a full custom Vmax build for a customer in Louisiana I am making some good progress.

if you want to keep your fairings where they are in that pic, but dont want the bars to hit, then you can put the bars under the triple tri to allow more clearance,
