Copied from a toysport.com article(i personally know Joel at Toysport, he's one of the original founders of TRD USA in the 70's, so what he says is true regarding this, and he also supplied me with a lot of parts for my car project):

Yamaha developed the Toyota 2000GT and was a Toyota partner in the design of most Type G heads. Most engines/heads, including the 3SGE/3SGTE (now in it's 4th generation), the Previa specific 2TZFE/Z (no relation to the old T engines), and the newest 2ZZGE engines were and are still designed and cast by Yamaha. Yamaha also assembles most of the Toyota G model engines.

(The 4AGE and 2JZGE heads are proprietary Toyota designs and manufacture, although many components are still made and supplied by Yamaha).

Yamaha also tuned my engine, well, the stock version..haha..before I tore into it. The Gen IV version of my engine (BEAMS 3SGE) is a naturally aspirated 4 cyl that puts out 207hp.

My car is a 95 Celica GT Convertible with an almost 500hp Gen III 3sgte from a JDM MR2, I've built the engine completely, nothing about the engine is stock anymore, I love that car...probably more than I love donuts..it's really hard to tell which one i love more. I have the engine out of the car right now..sigh..need a turbo and some sensors..sigh again. I have so much money in just parts alone in that engine, i can't really begin to list it, but my cashflow has dropped considerably lately. The pic below shows my cracked timing belt cover with the Yamaha name on it. I had my toyota before I really got into yamaha's, I was trying to find out if Toyota made bikes and if they stayed in Japan, I found out about their partnership with Yamaha and, soon after, got a yamaha! Anyway, i'm bored, but i thought you guys might like to know about the Toyota-Yamaha connection.

oh yeah! this was the coolest thing ever when i realized it...since yamaha designed the head, they saw fit to use the EXACT same depth from the top of the head to the spark plugs on the 03 - 05 R6 and on the 3sgte. Since the R6 uses coil-over-plugs, i'm using the R6 coils on my Toyota, they fit perfectly down in the head, and the rubbers on the top of the coils rest right on top of the head when they pop on the spark plug. It's a perfect match, like the coil-overs were designed for the 3sgte!!! i'm still excited about that..and i bought those 2 years ago..haha!

question since coil overs are supposedly more efficient than separate units can they be used on other style bikes ie FZR with any gain ? ie space under the Faux tank & air box set up.

Goerge, That's an interesting question. I'm going to have to investigate that myself. In theory there is no reason why our two primary leads couldn't be split into four and attached to c-o-p . I am assuming that one wire is the 'hot' and the other is a switched ground from the ignitor box that dumps the coil.

I'll find out before the day is over.

ive been into first gen celicas since the early 90s. toysport is gone now...or moved. funy....i just pot my old 18 RG on craigslist last night....including the yamaha head...

toysport moved about 2 years ago from their main location to 3 different location. They work on cars at one place, the showroom is at another place and they have storage at another place. I haven't called there is aobut 3 or 4 months..but as far as i know they are still around.

i like the 1st gen celica's man..there was a guy that came to one of the toyota meets here with a dark green JDM one. Right hand drive and everything. It looked new. nicest one i've seen, but you don't see many of them.

funny you mention that, i've been meaning to pull out one of the R6 coils and try to drop it in to the FZR to see if it would fit. I've been trying to find aftermarket R6 coils for the longest time, so I can just put those on my car and have an even hotter spark. If you guys come across any aftermarket ones can you let me know? And the engine isn't in my car right now, so i'll have to dig up the coils.

i'll have to follow the wires from the FZR wiring diagram again, i just glanced at it quick this morning before i left, but the red/white wire comes from the ignition fuse and kill switch, and the orange and gray wires come from the CDI. From what it looks like, the red/white wires give the FZR coils power and the orange and gray wires go to each coil and give the signal. Both spark plugs fire at the same time on each coil, and the coil doesn't get it's power from the CDI. Basically there is a different setup on the FZR's than there is on the R6. You would need a different type of CDI that can control all 4 cylinders instead. You might be able to wire in two relay's from the red/white wires and have the gray or orange wires as the signal wires. Split off the red/white wire AFTER each relay to power coils 1/4 and 2/3, and theoretically they should both fire at the same time just like the stock setup. I don't know, i'll have to think about this for a while...

I’ve had 2 MR2's. That timing covers off a N/A celica. What kind of ECU are you running to have coil over plugs? The only 3s motors I’ve seen those on is a stock 4th gen. I got to drive a 300hp MR2. Scarry fast!!! Once that turbo spools it puts you in the engine bay.

A relay might be feasable to make, but I think the reason they use seperate coils is because of the fuel injection. That way the computer can compensate spark to help with timing and emissions. Now if the '99-'02 R6 had the same coil set up, then it might be possible to hack the computer and set it up to run the FZR motor. Or maybe that model will have such a relay for the coils and it can be adapted.

Our FZRs have TCI ignitions. This is essentially a solid state 'kettering type' ignition. The coils have full time 12vdc to saturate them, and the ignitor box switches the 12vdc off when a spark event is needed. The primary coil field collapse induces the secondary coil to spark the plug. (this is distinct from a CDI system in which the ignition primary is fired by a high voltage(100-300vdc) pulse from triggered capacitors which induces a stepped up pulse in the secondary coil to fire the plug)

The red/white wires are the 12vdc 'supply'. The orange and grey wire are the 'signal' and they are 'on' (a circuit to ground is complete)most of the time, except when the ignitor box shuts them off (interrupts the circuit). The ignitor gets a crank position signal from the trigger coil and the logic in the box translates this to timing/advance/advance curve.

Our coils have a primary resistance of 1.8-2.2ohms. As long as a pair of c-o-p units has similar parallel resistance there should be no problem splitting the two red/whites into four and splitting the orange to two and the grey to two. This would still be a waste spark system-but room would be freed (no coils on frame) and plug wire/cap issues would, for the most part, be eliminated.

There should be no need for any kind of relay involved.

My car shop bud just replaced a nissan v8 in a customer's truck. The new engine came complete with coils, so he saved the 8 that came off the old engine. I am going there tomorrow to put a meter across the c-o-p units and I'm gonna go from there.
