Is this worth it?
I am in the middle of buying a 1994 FZR600 for $900. The bike is missing the front and side fairings, has a cracked left headlamp, doesn't recharge the battery, and has about 47,000 miles on it. It does have a new chain, new rear tire, and a R6 style tail though. Is it worth $900? The mileage is really a big concern, I've never seen a bike with that many miles, and maybe only one bike with half that many miles. I mean, even though it's a 94 and a Yamaha, everything on the bike has about 47k miles on them, like engine, shocks, clutch...
One side says go for it, and the other says pass. What do you guys think?

As long as you're prepared to spend another $1200-1800 or more on it for repairs and parts, then I say go for it.
I would really wait on it. I know you probably want it, but I wouldn't do it.
A friend by me bought a bike that didn't run for $800. It smokes like crazy, but it came with full fairings and extra side fairings, plus Accel coils, a V&H Powerpak and a very nice Fox Shock. He could make his money out of the deal if he decides to part it - the bike you're looking at doesn't have that going for it...

Re: Is this worth it?
Yeah really depends. If you're mechanically inclinded and don't mind a nice project bike, then go for it. But if you just wanna get on and ride, I would pass it up for sure.

I wouldn't do it...sounds like more problems than it's worth, especially with 47K mile on the clock.
Re: Is this worth it?
If you're just starting out............ $900 is what you should be spending on gear : jacket, pants, gloves, boots, helmet.
Time to save more money. 47,000 mile bike with that kind of damage will very likely be more of a headache than it's worth. However, if you have great mechanical ability and like to work on bikes more than ride them... (nothing wrong with that!) ... then go for it.

Re: Is this worth it?
with the above. I got my 92, with 35K miles, for $250. It looked just like how it's look now in my sig. No side fairings, no wind screen, cracked upper, boot rear fairings are cracked, the VR was bad, the list goes on. But i bought it as a restomod project. Basically you can do better than that or do just as bad for less money.

Re: Is this worth it?
Heck no I would offer 500-650 if I could test drive it before hand.. Most on here will prob agree with me. if the bike looks like it led a rough life on the outside 99 % of the time they didnt serviced the engine and tranny like he should have either. Most here will agree that when you start tearing into bikes as old as ours you will be very surprised at how many 30-50 dollar parts you find needing replaced and how quickly they add up. I paid 1200 for my 92 with an airtech R1 conversion kit, yoshi slip on, and 12800 miles on her. she books for 1400 in excellent shape. I felt like I gave too much for her now that I have gone through her and got her running decent and have seen so many nice fizzers newer than mine and pristine looking go for the same price. 47k is ALOT of miles.
Good luck.

A bike with 40,000+ miles is no big deal (this is a Jap bike, not a Harley or an Italian bike) if it was properly maintained.
Sounds like the bike has problems right off the start.
I'd let that sleeping dog alone. It'll probably bite you.

Re: Is this worth it?
$800 is way too much. I have purchased 5 fzr bikes for around $500 each with similar damage. Some where better than others. One had a bent frame, and one I used for parts. The 3 others were fixed and either sold or still in my garage. To make them run I averaged about $1000-$1500 of additional investment for each of them. The advantage to this is a fully restored bike built the way I want. (new tires, pipes, gears, chain, electrical system, suspension, paint). My recent one I have spent about 2500 on it (including the bike) and it looks awesome. Its always a work in progress but I hope to keep it around for vintage purposes.

Re: Is this worth it?
i paid $1300 for mine. the guy i bought it off paid $1400 for it a few months prior to me (he since figured out that he needed a car to get groceries and go golfing, cant do that on a bike) and he had put a couple hundred into it for new tires and stuff. i feel i paid too much for it, now that the transmission is pretty much completely f'd now. but i knew about third gear when i bought it. the only plastics its got need replacing cuz they're cracked beyond repair. bike has 22k on it, and you can tell. but i wanted a fzr and they are a little harder to come by around here. but its a project, and i've enjoyed working on it. but the 47k bike sounds like more work than its worth IMO.

Unless there are actual chunks missing out of the plastic it can be repaired with Plastex.

even if it is missing chunks you can repair it with plastex , you just have to find someone with busted plastics that will send you the chunks you need , the link in my sig shows all stuff i plastex'd on mine .yamaha_george wrote:DK69,demon_knight69 wrote:i. the only plastics its got need replacing cuz they're cracked beyond repair. .

Re: Is this worth it?
yeah most of the plastics i've got have got a couple chunks missing. i'll end up using some plastex at some point. gotta get the transmission done first though and then i should be all set to play around with plastics.
