I've got a weird buzzing noise coming from the general vicinity of below my ass when I'm riding. It varies with wheel speed, not engine speed. It's loud enough that I can hear it with earplugs on. I took off the drive sprocket cover on Sunday looking for anything catching and didn't see anything. I lubed the chain and that seemed to take care of it, but noticed it again on the commute home this afternoon. I've only ridden about 200mi. since lubing the chain, so it seems strange that it would need to be done again already. It did sit outside (covered) in the rain on Monday, and it got rained on briefly at work this morning; would that make the difference?
Any thoughts?

Have you tried puting it up on a rear stand and spinning the wheel by hand? Also double check chain tension and wheel alignment.

Yeah, it's the Honda.
I checked chain tension yesterday with halfassed measuring tool I cooked up last weekend and I thought it looked ok. But I'll check that again. I have had it up on the swingarm stand. Spinning the wheel by hand didn't make much noise. Starting it up and easing off the clutch a little in first gets the noise going (presumably because the wheel is spinning faster).
Regarding the wheel alignment, how precise does it have to be? I tried eyeballing it with the gradations on the swingarm and that didn't seem precise enough so I got a caliper out and measured from the front of the axle block to the rear of the swingarm on both sides. This assumes that the swingarm is precisely the same length on both sides; my measurement showed that both sides were within .1mm or so. I hear a little rubbing on the rear pads when I spin the wheel, but it doesn't seem too bad. I actually took a picture of how i'm measuring the alignment (below).
Is there a better way to measure the alignment than how I'm doing it. It seems that there has to be a more accurate way than eyeballing the marks on the swinger.
You think it could be a loose bolt on the exhaust? I hadn't thought to check that.

Got home and checked the alignment with the nice electronic caliper (used the "usually close enough" crap one before); off by about 0.4mm adjusted and now it looks to be within 0.05mm. Spinning the rear wheel by hand I noticed a little chatter in the chain, lubed that and now it makes a nice sshhtick sound as it releases from the sprockets. I have a little intermittent rub hiss from the rear caliper. I'm going to take to go check all the exhaust bolts I can find and take her for a spin.

...i wish i had a voice recorder, i'd tape it to the side of my bike and go riding. it definitely sounds like a buzzing that changes in pitch as i go faster. When I move my left leg out away from the bike i can really hear it.

take another picture i bet your chain is too friggen tight or is it possible a tooth on the front or rear sprocket is broken ? Is this the brand new 600RR ???
unfortunately your nuts only get bigger with these bikes. mine are starting to get quite uncomfortable. I may have to invest in a wheelbarrow.

yeah, the new 600rr. the chain may be too tight. when i measure the play in the chain, how hard should i pull on the chain? I'm pulling pretty hard (20lbs force?) and setting the chain for about 32mm play (spec is 30-40mm). When I first noticed the buzz last weekend my chain was way loose. Could I be getting the same buzz with too much free-play and to little?
