GSXR 750 rear shock install

gotta a complete rear shock assembly off a 2003 gsxr 750. does anyone know if i need to remove the swingarm for this swap? i was gonna jack the bike up so the rear was just hangin' there, unbolt the stock shock assembly (shock,dogbones & knuckle) slide it down and out and do the same process reversed for the 750 shock install. looks like its gonna be a close call if the rezzy will fit through the swingarm though.

Hi I plan to remove the old shock down thro the s/arm but take the battery box & battery to make working on the top socket easier then lowering in the GSXR600 shock.

I didn't have to remove te swingrm. I used an engine hoist and ratchet strap to get the back wheel off the ground and used a floor jack to raise and lower the swingarm (it has to be able to move up and down freely). Now if you have the same shock I tried on my 600 you'll either need to "relieve" the battery box (cut out the bottom) or raise it up a bit so it doesn't hit the reservoir of the shock. The only Gixxer parts I used in my swap was the shock itself and the the dog bones (I have since swapped back to the fzr shock but kept the dog bones as you can see from my sig). The shock was shimmed at the top with washers and at the bottom the original FZR center shock linkage knuckle was turned 180 degrees. I'm probably leaving something out but you get the idea.

I'll warn you now about those shocks. This may not apply to you if you're not a big guy but the spring rate for that shock is lower than what the FZR shock is. So that means the back of the bike will bottom out on any kind of spirited acceleration. Plus they're a lot longer than the FZR shock.

My best suggestion when it comes to GSXR shocks is to stick 05 06 shocks rebuilt with a higher rated spring. PIMPMYFZR has one on his bike and so far it seems to be doing well.

You should not have to remove the swinger. Jack up the shock area and then place a stand on both sides of the frame and the lower the jack all the way and move it to the side. You then can remove the shock.

i didnt even use a jack at all just the swingarm stand then put some axle stands not even put up one notch they were low enough then just used the swingarm stand to lay it on them ,,, next time though if i do a shock change ill use a life to get higher clearence ..if yours is as long as mine ,shock that is ..your fzr dogbones will lower the bike ..and does the top mount have same diameter as fzr bolt ? or do u have to make the whole bigger?

maybe i should just find an r6 shock on ebay and go with that instead. im not that big (well, only where it counts ) im 5'11" 175lbs. just by looking it does seem longer than the stock fizz shock. our bikes are heavier than a gsxr so thats like adding another 45lbs to me (kinda):thumbsdown doesn't sound like it's that great of a swap. ill post pics of the shock i have. i was gonna do racetech springs & gold valves up front at the same time i did the gsxr shock but the rear is just TOO soft so i cant wait. whats the most common r6 shock swap?

why not just have the GSXR shock fitted with a 750 pound spring ?

you'll probably have all the same "too soft" problems with an R6 shock.

see thats what i was thinking. ALL the newer bikes weigh ALOT less than the fizzer, which means the stock spring rates arent that stiff. i could definately get a heavier spring but my only concern now is that it looks like the rez is gonna hit that metal tab below that battery box and im not really wanting to mess with it. the r6 rez looks way lower.

if it looks like mine then you should be ok ..but maybe the older ones have the resevior higher .. im sure that gsxr shock will work just as good as the old fzr one if thats whats in there now ... anything is better then whats in there ..

i took my swingarm off the bike so i can mess around up in there , but thats on you ..

but if you want a really really good shock id suggest this .. not too cheap but your getting a hell of a shock ..

That's exactly like the one i had and you'll have battery box issues for sure. The one Pimp has is from an 05 an up gixxer. It looks like this . When Rage had his FZR he experimented with a Busa shock and mounted it backwards but it still took some work to get it in there. But he ended swapping that out as well. Pimp got lucky with his shock because it was already rebuilt with a heavier spring. You would be better off going with an r6 or gixxer shock like the one i just mentioned have have it resprung OR find yourself a WP, Progressive 420, Fox, or Penske that was built for the FZR. If you still wanna try the one you have, go for it. The learning experience is actually beneficial. That's what I did and gained a better understanding.

No offense and i hope u get all your asking for but i think it will be pretty hard to get that much for it being that they seem to be so cheap . i got 2 newer style ones .. 50 dollars with it being resprung for heavier rider and anothr 06" stock for 7 dollars , i think sweekster had good point though, without taking or cutting ur battery box u wont fit that in there and the newer r6 shocks i think are almost close to bolt on ..
