Anyone have a spare lock cylinder for the YZF or FZRgas cap?

Post by match417 »

I need a different key cylinder and key. I've been using this key (pictured) since i got the bike, when I got it the center strip was there but separated and barely connected but still out of the way, i just ripped it out not long after i had the bike because what's the point of leaving the strip in there when it was broken. I don't care about the keys being different, i have all separate keys now anyway. And someone took a screwdriver to my gas cap in my parts bike so i can't use that one. The reason i'm asking for just the cylinder and not the entire cap is because I asked if anyone had a gas cap on fzrarchives a long time ago, and no one was willing to let one go. I guess because if they have a spare one, it's capping off a spare gas tank.

I figure that since there are quite a few people that have done the yzf tank conversion, there are a few that swapped out the key cylinders with their stock FZR one to keep all the keys the same. And hopefully they still have the YZF one around with the key. I know this key has lasted a while already, but it's always been hard to turn in the cap, and one day i know it's just gonna break off while i'm at the gas station and i'm gonna be screwed with almost no gas in the tank.

This could have been solved easely if Wal-Mart still did motorcycle key spares.
I wanted to get a spare made for mine because mines a big skull and it doesnt go well in my pocket so I wanted to get a normal one made. But NOPE!
Wal-mart disapoints me

no, the r6 gas cap won't fit the FZR tank, i have an r6 tank lying around and I just tried it, cap doesn't fit..all i need is the lock cylinder inside the gas cap, or an FZR gas cap. and i looked on ebay for one and messaged some people, but they were selling the set and didn't want to sell the cap by itself. And I can buy a blank key at Yamaha for $4, and try to have someone make a copy, but the key is bent and barely works in the cap already, so i would get a crappy key. I would almost have to take my gas cap to a locksmith to have another key made. But now that I've put thought into it, it's almost worth the $4 getting a blank and having someone try to copy it for $2 to see how well it will work. Otherwise, my key breaks in the cap, and i'm forced to buy a whole lock set for the bike for $150 or whatever.

he has the gas cap, but he might want to sell the tank with it.
the tanks bent so he should sell it for cheap. like $30

i was looking for cheaper than that... you know what, it's probably worth the effort of going to yamaha and getting a $4 key and trying it, i think i'm going to tomorrow, if it doesn't work then i lost a measly $6...thats a cup of starbucks, or 6 dollar menu items at McD's...

problem resolved! I took it to a lock place down the street..and the guy made a copy of the key, it took him 5 tries, and he had to manually grind the key with some file thing, but it works great, i don't even have to press down the gas cap anymore to turn the key. And he only charged me $6. sweet..now i don't have to worry about the key breaking.
