HELP Electrical Problem

Post by tkclow »

Sorry if this is a long description, I came home for lunch today and was going to ride the bike back to work, turned on the key, hit the starter and "CLICK"
hit starter again and "CLICK" then nothing would not even turn on lights, totally dead. Thought maybe battery, took my meter and checked the battery voltage and it was 12.06V, turned the key on and still nothing, with key on I was going to check voltage again, as soon as I touched the Positive terminal with meter lead all the lights came on. Everytime I would pull the lead off lights would go back out, touch it again, lights back on. Water in the battery is full, I pulled the battery and it looks ok, I reinstalled it and made sure all the connections were tight and turned the key on and all seemed ok, started right up and then I noticed that now the only light on the guages that works is the Neutral light, no speedo or Tach backlight, no oil light and now the headlight is not coming on. All other lights are working normally. Blinkers and tail/brake lights. Blinker light will flash on guages when activated. I am now really confused, can't ride it at night now. Does anyone have any ideas? HELP PLEASE. thanks alot for any help or suggestions. :swear

should be under the rear fairing somewhere.
all of my stuff is tucked under my seat

theres a fuse box with 4 fuses theres three 10's and one 20.
and there is also a fuse that sits by itself which is for the main power and its a 25.
if NOTHING happens AT ALL when turning the ignition on, then this should be the problem.

After I reinstalled the battery everything seems normal now with the exception that the guage lights and headlight do not come on now. Starts and runs fine now just no lights, but all the linkers are working fine as is the brake and tail light.

check the fuses. see if any are fried.
if you find a fried one, then replace it and your stuff should all work.

I dont know where it is exactly on a stock bike, but its easy to find.
its a black box that says FUSE on it...I believe, you remove the lid and there are the fuses

Found it, did not see the FUSES because someone had wrapped it in electrical tape. The 20amp at the end was blown and I was happy to see there was a spare 20 and 10 in the case. Swapped the 20amp and all lights are working fine now. Thanks again for all the help. I will get some pics of the bike up on Wednesday when I have a day off.

One thing to think about is that for your fuse to blow, typically it requires either a voltage spike (not likely if your voltage regulator is working fine) or a wire to short or "ground out" somewhere on the frame. When I installed my first set of generic flushmount turn signals, the same thing that happened to you happened to me. Check any wisible wires for damage to the insulation and if you find any damage, just wrap some electircal tape around it to keep it from doing it again. Most of the time, that'll keep the same problem from happenning the same way.

Just remember to replace the spare fuses in your box asap, so if the same thing happens again at night you aren't stranded or anything. As far as the main fuse, shredex's is apparently a 25, mine's a 30 (1997 FZR600R). I carry a couple of spare 30's, 20's, and 10's in the plastic bag under my seat that holds my tag receipt and insurance for reassurance's sake, just 'cause I'm paranoid about getting stranded. :whistle

IMHO everyone should carry at least 2 or 3 spares for each circuit, as they don't take up much room and are fairly inexpensive but can royally screw up your day if they go bad. Anyway, that's my my2cents .
