My new project. Hobby CNC machine
Hey guys, some know I'm workin on a hobby CNC machine. I'm tired of having to go somewhere and beg & plead for small parts to be made. This is just the first version of it as once I outgrow this one, I'll build a larger and more durable machine. Currently it's built out of 3/4" MDF and I'll be covering it in a waterproof membrane so that I can use coolant when cutting metal materials.
With the tool and the electronics that are on order, I should be able to cut 6061 pretty easily, however I'll still need to take small cuts so I don't wear out the equipment.
Anyways, here's a few pics of the build so far. I'm at a standstill right now because I'm waiting on my linear bearings and shafts to come in, as well as the electronics.

There's plenty of diffent places to get plans and such, I decided to buy the plans off a guy up here in Canada. There's about 5 or 6 different models to build, all varying in sizes plus you can always just up-scale the plans anyways and build bigger if you wanted too. YouTube's got TONS of videos on DIY Homebuilt or Hobby CNC machines..

Have you thought about picking up an older, used Bridgeport or the like? You've caught my interest. I'd like to see it when it's done.

Thought about it, just can't afford it.. As it is, this entire build will cost under $500.. Around here there's not too many oldies for sale, and the ones that I was interested in wouldn't justify the cost due to the shipping costs..
For now, this'll suffice. And to be quite honest, once I get this machine up and running efficiently, I will be machining the parts for the next machine (prob. a little bigger) from this one .. And they'll be done in Aluminum.
The cutting size of the current machine is 12"x12"x5" So as you can see it's going to be for small parts.. but that's what I want it for, at least for now anyways

Re: My new project. Hobby CNC machine
How tight are you expecting the tolerances to be? If you're thinking a couple thousandths (maybe even hundredths), I think you might be asking too much. Could be wrong though.

Re: My new project. Hobby CNC machine
I'm not sure yet, I guess it depends on the material I'm gonna use. For wood cuts and other soft materials, it should be pretty good.. I've seen some pics of stuff cut with the exact machine I'm building and it's quite impressive.
Once I actually get it built, then I'll test it out cutting different items and see how it holds up. I'm positive it'll need some reinforcement, but won't know how much until it's up and running.
This is what it will look like once complete:
I'm using Rhino3d v4 and Turbocad as my design software and Mach3 for the milling part of it. I've actually been offered a sweet deal from another company as they like helping out hobbyists in the field.. BobCad-Cam , is the software that I may end up using though as they're offering to sell to me for $400 instead of like the $3000.. we'll see.

3-Axis for now.. I'm gonna be going back to school once my surgery is over and done with and I'll likely head into the CNC course.. This is more to learn and get experience and maybe make a few $$$ in the process.

When I finish my powersports program this winter I want to go back and take a few cnc courses. Those machines fascinates me for some reason. Good luck with your machine.

I've got a copy of Inventor Pro 2008 that I'm trying to get rid of. It's the real deal, serial number and everything. Got it for free in a contest and I've got no use for it. Might a little too fancy for your application though.

Re: My new project. Hobby CNC machine
nice, so what are you making for me when you're done ?
How about some black anodized passenger pegs that will fit the stock FZR600, same angle and everything... just more like the newer R6 designs.
Let me know what you think (how much $$ & time)
So will you be using 6061, 7075 or both ?
I bet you could copy Modking's triple tree (??) design to start with, I wonder if he still has any. I can't remember if they're design for our fork tubes or not.
Just thinking out-loud.
"dude's got a stock swingarm, stock size tires, but holy crap look at those juicy passenger pegs." I can live with that. If I put a wider swingarm on it all the rear brake stuff will smash into my new FMF pipe.
(And yes, I'm considering China_Racer's rearsets in the future. Just not ready to do that yet. Need to get some other stuff for the 954 first, gotta be fair)

Re: My new project. Hobby CNC machine
That is absolutly awesome. Let me know if you need any help with the CAD part. I've got access to almost any AutoCAD program as well as MicroStation and Sketchup. I'm not completely up to par on the 3D side, but I'm getting there. I can run rings around most 2D users though (one of the few times I'll ever toot my own horn).
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.
Something is lurking, waiting, wanting to be built......It calls to me from the darkness....
I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel....Then I realize that it is the train coming to run my ass over....

Re: My new project. Hobby CNC machine
You could also do the R6 gauge mounting plate.
