Oil light concerns

Post by shawnwon »

My oil light comes on occasionally :yikes: . Now the oil level is at half so there is no problem there and it isnt burning any either.
Now the light has come on 4 different occasions. 1st & 2nd time was in the morning(different days) when entering an on ramp turning to the right and it was a little cold but was run for ten minutes(thats warm up and driving to the highway).

3rd & 4th time was today when taking my bike to my old mans house for him to check it out( temp out side was hot and the engine). It seems to only appear when taking a long right turn ie ON or OFF ramps.

Now Im not sure if its because Im really getting low in the turns or if may be the sensor.

Has anybody experienced this and Im just a worry wart :ermm: PLS hep me

I would say, you might need to add some more oil. Then see if the problem comes back. Check your oil often to see if your burning oil.

i dontt know if the light comes on for the oil level cause it comes on right away with the engine off when the oil in the engine is at the highest level i think it is for oil pressure it could be just a loose connection or the oil pump has a problem.

Its suppose to read at about 3/4 of the sight window. You may need to add a little just dont over fill. I wish these bikes had the dip stick, I hate the sight glass.

I have been monitoring the oil level and no indication of any oil loss via burning or leakage. If there is a loss it is so small its not noticeable. Do you think it would be wise to add more oil with it at the half mark?

Yes, because the half mark is not at full, its actually the 3/4 line of the window. I have the same problem when mine is at half and I add a little then I dont see the light. These lights work very well.

I hope it isnt the pump so close to the end of the season. I have no time to fart around with it.

The 87-88 1000 was known for that..The factory said to add 200 ml above the full line on the window. I bought a 87 new off the showroom floor and had the same problem back then.It seemed to happen when the bike is leaned over. If it happens on the highway lay off the gas and pull in the clutch and the light will go off...The light is not a oil-pressure light its a oil level light....

I added some oil but it occurred again :yikes: . I added a minuscule amount for fear of adding to much, but I guess it was not enough. It was a little dark but I will add more to hopefully cure this dilemma.

Thanks again,

95,
If you hate the sight glass make a dip stick & mark it when you know the oil is right , seems logical to me
Is there a GOTCHA lerking in the clutch area?

Ya haro when its a pressure sensor it will light up because of low pressure at low rpm's..A level sensor will light up at high rpm's because the pump is pumping oil faster than it can return to the pan....My oil light was coming on when I was on the highway returning from Cali back to SLC. I was cruising around 90 mph and when it would light up I would pull in the clutch and lay off the gas and the rpm's would dive down to 1000ish and the light would go off in about 2-3 seconds..... :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
